@larsiu he’s a 34 year old African studies rapper. He doesn’t know anything
The city has started the process of picking private operators to handle day-to-day operations of the shops. The administration will provide storefronts while covering rental costs and property taxes, officials said.
“We are not looking to compete with bodegas or grocery stores when it comes to their ability to survive. What we’re looking to do is to provide affordability that is guaranteed to New Yorkers,” he said.
Oh, guaranteed now? Hmm. So not only a 30% reduction in a space where 2% margins rule but now the taxpayers are covering real estate and property tax costs? Holy shit.
Wouldn't it be easier to just sell SNAP cards or some equivalent at a 30% discount?
Oh, I think Mamdani is trying to prove out pure socialism rather than let poor folks use SNAP in a capitalist system. My question, will these grocery stores take SNAP? I assume yes. Further eroding the customer base of local, non government owned, grocers.
@co-hoosier yes. No overhead etc. and what gov owned thing have you ever been in that isn’t disgusting in a year.

Mamdani isn’t very smart. We already have a system for food availability to all. And with delivery services starting to bloom, food deserts soon won’t even mean anything.

How about making them EBT only?
What % of grocery store revenue is SNAP/EBT?
I'll answer my own question - about 5-8% but I'd bet that in the neighborhoods in which these stores will reside that number is much, much higher. It's going to fuck over smaller shops. It's an economies of scale thing further perverted by the heavy hand of government intervention.
I'm a lefty on plenty of economic issues but this is pure lunacy.
We do national parks pretty well. So well many are simply overrun with visitors. A different breed of government employee work in the parks.
@co-hoosier yes very different. This will be three steps below. Our downtown Schnucks had a stabbing in front of it over the weekend. There’s a reason retail doesn’t want to be in the hood.
we have a street called Delmar. Famous street here. Sunday night they had another “teen” takeover. My buddy’s restaurant locked all the customers inside.
dems don’t want to get at the real issues. Clueless.
When will they open? In time for mid-terms but not enough that they are a proven failure yet?
I’m sure they want to run all of the privateers out of business so they can confiscate the real estate anyway…
Ever visited the nation's Capitol building, not on J6? It's extremely well maintained. As are state Capitol buildings - well, I've only been to Ohio's, Indiana's and Hawaii's, and they're all very nice. I'm sure the White House is nice, except for the tacky gold highlights, but I've not visited or toured it.@aloha-hoosier that's a different type too.
But back to NYC - I think his hairbrained plan is doomed to failure.
