Sounds like he blew the jury selection. All white jury in a case like this? Should be an easy appeal, should it not? Granted, we don't know any specifics, but still......
@dbmhoosier no he had a private practice crim lawyer
Correction: a former public defender. He had no idea how to prep his witnesses or conduct jury selection. A complete disaster of a defense.
Didn't he stab the guy in front of like a thousand witnesses? What brilliant defense did the lawyer miss on?

It was pretty cut and dry. He stabbed the other kid. Claimed he was surrounded and had to defend himself. All the eyewitnesses, including his, said that wasn't the case. Is the argument that the jury should have had a black guy on it willing to disregard all the evidence and testimony for the sake of this kid who killed another person not guilty?
Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for. - Seamus Heaney, Irish poet and likely Hoosier basketball fan. POTFB

All I'm saying is that the jury's makeup should provide adequate grounds for appeal. Nothing else. It does sound like they had him cold, but the prosecutors gave the defense a good basis for challenging the verdict. But of course IANAL. I'll wait for those who know what they're talking about to weigh in.

If we waited for those who knew what they were talking about, there'd only be about 10 threads on here with no replies in any of them.

@unclemark no. That’s not grounds. There’s no guarantee of composition makeup. Need a showing of discrim. No idea if defense raised batson challenges. I trust parents spent most of the money as the lawyer looks like the pd still employs him

He is clearly guilty and should face punishment. However, 1st degree? Can the lawyers on the board explain that part? Seems like it was a random fight amongst teenagers that escalated into a terrible tragedy.
@jdb numbers skyrocket with black on black crime. these teen takeovers are a nightmare. pattern recognition isn't racism. but with the left you can't discuss it. it's impossible. and it's sad because it's no good for anyone. the craziest bit here is how many kids with guns are arrested and literally released that very night to go back out the next day and do as they please
because rights want to fix anything? they just like making political talking points and pointing fingers. Just like when Trump torpedoed the border bill. The issue is more helpful than a solution.
Lets talk about gun control? Conservatives: naw, can't do that
