I'm doing a trail relay race in Oregon at the end of this month. Should I be worried about this type of thing?

Not me, that's a soccer player. Though he forgot to flop after punching the cardboard

@ohio-guy not at all. bigfoot is real but they typically avoid people. i'd be more worried about bears as they seem to be on the attack this year. just make sure you aren't the slowest one in the race....

Worried about the quick turnaround for the second one or what?
Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for. - Seamus Heaney, Irish poet and likely Hoosier basketball fan.

You know he went full Kip Dynamite with the satisfied chuckle after he wrote that.

Reminds me of a Whose Line Is It Anyways episode. Ryan Stiles gets up there and says "Pitbulls! Ugg. I shouldn't have worn my meat pants."

The absolute worst part of these races are the runs you do in the middle of the night. We each do six legs of the relay and about 2 1/2 of them happen in the dark. Putting on a headlamp to go run in the woods in the middle of the night when you're already tired/sleep deprived isn't the best of times. This will be the fifth summer in a row I've done one of these and every year I say it's my last one. I imagine it's a little like child birth in a way where the further away you are from it, the more appealing doing it again sounds. My friends also peer-pressure me saying they need me to round out their team. Plus, it's a cool sense of accomplishment when you're done.
The Ragnar people have a disclaimer about wildlife encounters. They basically say something to the effect of the chance of encountering wildlife isn't zero, but for the most part the trails are all on well-traveled and frequently used parts of the parks that animals typically avoid.
@ohio-guy that stuff is really really cool. i'd just be scared shitless of turning an ankle at night
@bar-down I took a pretty nasty fall into some sagebrush during the Utah race in Zion. That kind of turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because I ended up taking it easy during my night runs. I'll probably end up doing that again on the night runs this year (taking it easy, not falling into sagebrush).
That said, these trips turn into decent vacations too. We'll leave super early on Thursday, June 25, take our time getting to our campsite (we pay extra for their 'glamping' set up when we fly to these things) and start the run early Friday morning. We finish Saturday morning - head to an airbnb for a shower and nap and then hit up some breweries and whatever on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. We head back that Tuesday.
Last year we went to the Wynn in Vegas for a couple days after running in Mt. Zion. This year we're staying in an airbnb in Bend, Oregon. We're flying in and out of Eugene so we might check that area out too. All in all, it'll be a good time.
@ohio-guy that sounds absolutely amazing! super super fun. i always thought about doing that stuff but never did. i've even watched some on youtube. i would have been a good runner. i had great endurance. it was the 40 yard dash that was my demise

The odds of you being killed by a crab with a knife are low.
....but they are not zero.
