“If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor.”

That's a lie we both criticized.

It wasn't a lie. Nothing in the ACA prevented you from seeing your old doctor. It was the doctors who chose not to treat their patients who were using the ACA for their health coverage because they didn't like the reimbursement rates.

It was a lie. The President even knew he was lying when he said it. It was only one of the many lies told to pass Obamacare.

I can't believe a man like Obama would lie.  Just yesterday an older gentleman was telling me I was dumb because I think he earned some of his wealth through pay to play corruption.  If Obama would lie about something as major as ACA, perhaps he would also lie about how he earned his wealth.  You know, because he's totally fine with be dishonest to get what he wants.  You're a wise old gentleman.  What do you think?

What provision of the ACA prevented you from seeing your old doctor?

The President was told that many Doctors would not participate after the ACA was passed but he made that claim anyway.

"You can keep your old doctor, but he might not want to keep you."

I think your post is stupid and that you still don’t have a clue what constitutes corruption. Happy to help.

@aloha-hoosier I was just picking your brain.  I was starting to think Obama was a standup guy and didn't doesn't lie.  Thankfully, you set me straight today.

Crazy thought. I bet some people/companies made a sh#t ton of money off of Obamacare.  Perhaps one of those people paid Obama a lot of money to hear him speak as a kickback for Obama making them a lot of cheese?  I know it sounds crazy, but I've heard stories before how humans can be immoral, especially ones that lie like Obama.  Either way thanks for setting me straight today on Obama's poor character.

Obama and the Democrats knew exactly what was going to happen.

I am dealing with it right now. My cardiologist, gastroenterologist, urologist and neurologist all shoved me off on their Nurse Practitioners. Pisses me off and not a damn thing I can do about it.

Before Obamacare I probably had 15-20 doctors and specialists with their own practice. Now every single one works for a Hospital. They go put in their hours and go home. Their patients all screwed.

And this was all part of Obama's master plan?

More or less. A cursory understanding of economics would tell you that the ACA would balloon premiums, Obama may or may not have had that understanding.

The ultimate goal being to fuck the healthcare system so sideways that the public cries out for M4A. And blame it on the insurers of course.

Worked on you. You’re a good little lemming.

The whole deal with Obamacare was to cover the highest cost patients with a huge tax on the middle class

All politicians tell lies now and then for political purposes. They’re all amateurs compared to our President. You’re welcome.

Do you really want to defend free education?

Sure. I will.

Singapore:  free K-12

Finland:  free K-12

S. Korea:  free K-12

Feel free to name a K-12 system designed to provide education to mass populations that is not free and more successful than those or the U.S.'s.

Of course, that's not possible.

So free education can work (remember this is en masse).  I think it's now your burden to prove why higher education couldn't also work for free.  I can list other nations that have that, too, that have pretty good results.

The top university systems are dominated by a few key countries:
  • United States: Unmatched in total numbers of elite institutions and research funding, heavily featuring schools like MIT, Stanford, and Harvard. [1, 2]
  • United Kingdom: Home to some of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world, such as the University of Oxford (consistently ranking as the #1 university globally) and the University of Cambridge. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Germany: Renowned for highly practical, engineering-focused universities (often called Technische Hochschulen) and widely offering free or low-cost tuition for both domestic and international students. [1]
  • Australia: Offers a highly integrated, globally-focused higher education system featuring top-tier institutions like the University of Melbourne and the Australian National University. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Switzerland: Punching well above its weight with highly technical, elite research institutions like ETH Zurich. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Germany offers free or low cost tuition.

UK offers subsidies and caps the cost of tuition.

Australia subsidized a major portion of the tuition, and the offers income-contingent repayment.

Switzerland highly subsidizes universities with students paying no more than $5k per year.

There is more to a deception than the actual words.  Context matters. Obama said that when Obamacare was hanging by a fingernail.  He intended to convey the notion that nothing would change except the payment system.  He was convincing and he knew otherwise.

@mrhighlife mamdani. Public grocery stores. Confiscation of private property and control over redistribution of same.  Etc.

no, I would not vote for someone who I thought would actually do those things. I may not vote for someone who even says they would but actually doesn't.

I should have been more specific. Free public education has worked and can work. But for millions of kids, especially those who need it the most, free education is failing.  Many reasons for this.

I'm finding a Trump defender complaining about Obama's honesty gives me a headache.

I've not been a shrinking violet in critiquing the education system on this site.  I think it's one of the first things I posted about w/r/t anti-racism movements to end honors classes in middle and high schools.

But the reason a lot of kids are having problems right now has many reasons--I'd suggest that the education system isn't ideal, but that has nothing to do with whether it is "free" or not.  I  think the better causes to address are politicization of pedagogy and lack of parental involvement, neglect, or parental ignorance.

Assuming our finances could handle it, I'd be all in favor of a push to make all state universities free to US residents for particular majors (which would, obviously, require some regulation of professor and administrator salaries--which I'm sure they would be in favor of since they are mostly leftists, amIright?).

What's the purpose of education? Is it to prepare future generations to be productive in society, or is it to indoctrinate them into our preferred set of cultural values?

I think the answer to that question will inform the answer to the debate between you and CO.H.

It's mostly productivity, some personal growth and flourishing in general, but even that must carry with it some indoctrination into a preferred set of cultural values.  I don't like the illiberal values of the Woke and think they are detrimental to productivity and personal growth and flourishing.

But some of the values I think we should teach is a certain level of tolerance, love of free and open inquiry, and a hope to try to be objective (even if it might be impossible). If those lead one to Woke beliefs, so be it.
