The examples I gave were quintessential, textbook cases of nationalism,
Nationalism requires elements of common and shared ideology, politics, sovereignty, etc. Your examples don’t.
nationalism and Western unity are incongruous goals.
I don’t see this at all. Nationalism and negotiated relationships are not any more incongruous than two companies entering into a commercial relationship for their own self interests.
Rubio notes that under President Trump, the United States has made its choice. I agree. That is a good thing. When I hear the slogan Make America Great Again, I think of everything Rubio said.
What makes you think America has made its choice? Trump's vision of Nationalism won't survive intact over the next two election cycles no matter who wins. Tariffs, the execution of his immigration policies, the war with Iran -- all extremely unpopular, and becoming more so among his base. Check the polls.
The old model was broken but this isn't the new one.
It’s true the Democrats can FUBAR the path Trump has established. But it will take much more than changing short term unpopularities to do that.
@el-zee his immigration policies aren't unpopular at all. And they'll continue to be implemented in 28 if Vance or Rubio wins the Presidency. Not to mention the Democrats have also walked back their positions on immigration. Nobody gives a sh#t about tariffs besides Murt and he's still voting GOP. I agree the Iran War isn't popular, but oil prices will trend back to cost of production by 28.
First, calling for "skyrocketing" defense budgets across Europe isn't a strategy for peaceful independence; it is a recipe for military aggrandizement. Historically, when a bloc of nations heavily militarizes under the banner of national survival, it heightens global paranoia, triggers arms races, and makes devastating conflicts more likely. Real security relies on diplomacy and de-escalation, not on turning the Western world into an armed camp.
Perhaps, but who is going to fund the protection and deterrence against Russia, China, Islamic states, etc. if not for their own nations? I emphasize with the lack of willingness given the two World Wars and acknowledge your point that it may make things worse. But, how is it helpful for the U.S. to subsidize NATO and multi-national defense? It's not like this is a Russian state that has not demonstrated a direct intent to conquer or reconquer land and resources.

The fact that Obama and Biden immigration failures refuse to be acknowledged as such is precisely why we have the pendulum swinging back so sharply the other direction. Can anyone out there steady the dial in the middle? I haven't seen them.

Folks wanted the border fixed, but not the way it's been done. Again, check the polls.
Everyone seems to be giving a shit about tariffs. Prices are top of mind right now. This board is not the country.
I'm not debating who people should vote for. Maybe Vance or Rubio keep the good, flip the bad, and get it done. Just saying this crazy bullshit this admin keeps referring to as Nationalism is dead in the water. It's not what the electorate wants and is unsustainable geopolitically.
Nobody gives a sh#t about tariffs besides Murt and he's still voting GOP.
The two things Trump has done to make your life unaffordable (American's #1 concern, by every poll) are 1) crazy tariffs and 2) an ill-advised strategically inept neverending Middle East war. So I disagree.
It’s true the Democrats can FUBAR the path Trump has established. But it will take much more than changing short term unpopularities to do that.
It won't just be Democrats. Republicans will jettison this weird version of Nationalism by necessity soon enough. My bet is even the next GOP prez will find a more appealing middle ground on immigration and trade agreements. They'll want reset internationally and distance themselves from this chaos.
They may try to keep using the word but it will get a 3rd reboot. Think Compassionate Conservatism. I'd vote for Nuanced Nationalism but I suck at marketing.

Tariffs haven't done shit for affordability for the bottom 50-75% of society. They're a tax that are almost entirely paid by businesses, other countries, and the top 10-20% of Americans. I agree the Iran War has raised costs.

Polls don't matter. Voting does. We will find out in November of 26 and 28 how unpopular Trump's policies are.

I'm assuming they all die in their primaries or wouldn't want to run in the first place. I realize it's always been smoke-and-mirrors but the lies each side is requiring their elected members to tell right now is f*cking insane. My only hope is that both sides are picking directions so unfeasible, so immediately unpopular and destructive that a middle ground just kind of appears out of the wreckage.
I'm going to have 8 beers and think about it more.
Tariffs haven't done shit for affordability for the bottom 50-75% of society.
The bottom 75% don't drink coffee, eat fruits and veggies, or buy any of the 100s of things affected by tariffs? REALLY?

Not if we're stuck in another one of those hold-your-nose type deals in '28. Please, no more grand reshaping of the free world by the current versions of these idiots. Nothing reactionary, quell the zealots. I don't want to have to choose between some guy who stands with Palestine vs. some guy who threatens treaty allies with force and tariffs over Greenland. Neither can actually achieve their agenda, claim a mandate, or further this country's interests.

Almost 60% of all spending is driven by the top 10% of society today. Yes, the bottom 75% consume all of those things. And thankfully at home food costs are more affordable today than they were when Trump took office. Food at home CPI is 3.4% since he took office. Nominal wages have increased 5.5%. The drag on the economy and affordability has been the Iran War. Essentially, tariffs have been a tax on the wealthy and foreigners. And the media has somehow convinced liberals its a bad thing, because of their TDS.
