3rd time is a charm.  Was so amped up.  She'll be 16 next month.  Come to find out you have to hold a permit for 6 months before you can get your driver license.  first day back driving her to school.  sat in traffic there.  went to the starbucks i don't like.  two high schools and a college literally all connected with the entire student body at the starbucks.  miserable.  fought traffic all the way back to the office where now bc school started i can no longer walk to work.

why would you have to have a permit for six months?!  wtf.  when we were kids you turned 16 went straight to the dmv and drove right off the lot!  none of this permit bs.  so anticlimactic.

We had drivers ed class.  It was like 4-6 weeks of classroom and then you got your permit. Then you were assigned to a group of 3 based on your birthdate.  Had to have so many hours with an instructor (mine was our Soph English teacher, who would just tell us "drive to such and such, then turn around and come back" and then catch a nap up front on the drive). If you graded out above a certain level you got skip the driving test and only had to pass the written one month after your 16th birthday.

I was driving to school for weight training and open gym at 14.  Nobody cared I was driving, they only cared that I showed up and did the work.

Thanks for attending my TedTalk

Bunch of farm kids that had been driving forever.  I started driving a pickup when I was 7. When dad was planting, I'd follow from field to field with the truck that had seed and fertilizer.  Slide down off the seat, push on the clutch and put it in low, let off the clutch and climb back up on the seat so I could see where I was going.  When I got there, slide back down off the seat, clutch and brake, then shut it off.

I don't think Indiana does driver's ed in the school anymore.  At least my kid's school didn't.

Thats why you have a 6 month period.

My kid rearended our neighbor 3 days into her driving career. Love tap, but still. Then she ran off the road twice. Can't possibly imagine what she was doing (phone).

Best story - wife and I are driving home from store. this is during kid's senior year of HS. (Caveat - I drive like an asshole. A safe, careful asshole, but still an asshole. I drive fast and I do not suffer idiots who can't drive). My daughter takes after me. So, we're driving home approaching the last roundabout before we get to our house. Speed limit 35, etc. As we approach the roundabout, I see what appears to be a crazy asshole driving a black car (hey honey, that looks a lot like *******'s car) coming to the same roundabout from our left. This crazy asshole then breathes on the brake pedal as they take what can only be described as the proper racing line through the roundabout to continue down the street to our house. Halfway through this maneuver the crazy asshole driver looks over at my wife and I approaching the roundabout and, wouldn't you know it, it's our daughter. I think she sped up.

My wife looks at me and says, simply, "this is your fault." To be fair, I have no defense.

A week or so in, my daughter swerved off the road near our house and took out a mailbox.  She said she had to, because a squirrel ran across the road in front of her.

I told her to hit the squirrel next time.

I used the same technique on a Farmall 560.
