Looks like a successful launch. Anyone have any grand thoughts about going back to the moon?
I am beyond excited. If the earth were an apple, the ISS flies at the top of the skin. We haven't been in space since Apollo. We are heading back and my kids and grandkids will get to see it.

If only you'd been in the book club meetings when we read Michener's Space and discussed the difference between unmanned probes and manned missions as it relates to the space program writ large.
@goat darn, I just gave a speech on that for a class. But my 2 classes kill my time. How did I take 15 hours in college the first time?
Oh wait, I just didn't do homework and learned things far quicker.

I think it depends whom you ask. Some people think it will reinvigorate the American space program. Some people think it will be a stepping stone to Mars. Some people think it serve as a unifying catalyst in an internationally polarized world. Some people probably just like rockets.

2. So, other than 4?
3. LOL.
4. Bingo. And if that's all it is, it's not worth it.
The fact is, we are never going to realistically live on any of these places. Our best bet is to engineer the Earth for better living, not another planet.

I agree with your sentiment if you replace "never" with "in the reasonably near future." In the far future, extraterrestrial colonization is a must.

Likely to prevent Chy-na from getting a leg up on lunar bases & such…
Millions of years? Humans will probably be extinct by then.1. Again, why, other than 4?Why go back?Looks like a successful launch. Anyone have any grand thoughts about going back to the moon?

I think the likely truth is that humans evolved on Earth and are a part of it and any attempt to transplant us on a foreign world will end horrifically.
If and when Earth dies, humans die, too.

Sun won’t die out for another 5 billion years. That’s some good runway to get to other solar systems, barring some other calamity.

Biology, though, might be the biggest hurdle. Our physical bodies are the product of billions of years of evolution within a biome/ecosystem that was evolving itself. We won't even know what will kill us on other "habitable" planets.

You are probably right, but I think we owe it to our species to at least gradually work toward making the attempt.
The best reason to go to the moon is to see If that American flag is really there or not.
