Wild stat, if true, regarding Sweet Sixteen participants/defending champions

In the past 15 years, UCONN (repeating NC's) won the championship one year and then advanced to the Sweet Sixteen the following year.  Every other champion in that time, has failed to make the 2nd weekend.  Florida continued that streak this year.

Donovan won it back to back in '06-07 but that's a bit farther back than 15 years.

Wright at Nova had one intervening year between championships 2016 and 2018. Was a 1-seed in 2017 but lost to 8-seed Wisconsin in the second round. Would have been nice to get him at IU somehow.

Thinking about it a bit it doesn't seem that surprising. A championship team is probably senior-heavy. So probably not uncommon for the next year to be something of a rebuild.
