I don't want to get in an argument about CDD here in this thread, so I exclude him from my hypothetical question, which is as follows:
Which BT coaches would be good enough, based on sheer development/game coaching/motivational chops, to win a National Championship.....IF they were given a complete roster full of 'their type of players' to play a season completely out........that is, excluding recruiting ability entirely.....or stated differently, which could win the NC if given a truly sufficient roster for their approach. Not saying WOULD win, just saying good enough that they would not screw the pooch. Here is my guess:
--Rhoades--No
--Sprinkle--No
--Diebler--No
--Pikiell--No
--Hoiberg--Yes
--Musselman--Yes
--Medved--Yes
--Collins--Yes
--McCollum--Yes
--Williams--Yes
--Cronin--Yes
--Underwood--Yes
--Altman--No
--May--Yes
--Gard--Yes
--Pointer--Yes
--Izzo--Yes.
I would say Sprinkle, Musselman, and Altman would be the toughest calls. As to Altman, I know he has had a long & successful career---I just have never looked upon him as a guy we'd want for IU when the opportunities came along.
Your thoughts?
Is Pointer meaning Painter? I don't know the names all coaches in conference if there's a Pointer. Maybe a sister
That said I don't think Collins has the chops. I know he owns us but ... if he did he'd have gone elsewhere already. Cause guys that have the stones want to win it all not stay an entire career in purgatory

yes

That is odd. I'm sure he had opportunities elsewhere. Maybe its best for his family? Loves Chicago area? Wants to work with NW-smart kids? Some combination of the 3?
DeVries - no

then to me he just wants a job. Security. He don't care about winning a title because if he did he wouldn't still be at NW ... no chance he can do that there. They won't let him compete

I wish some reporter would have had the gonads to ask Scott D. my hypothetical question. His statement right before the OSU implies that he disagrees with your conclusion. I thought it was a rather cowardly statement in terms of when it was released and what it implied but did not explicitly state. He is certainly a strategic guy.
32 coaches in past 50 years have NCAA championships.
Not very many can do it.
@tr32 And there are 7 currently working who have done it. It's a small club.

well mathematically only 50 could.. so are you saying that 32 different coaches have won is a small or large number. 65% have been won by a different coach.

Mathematically, every single D1 coach from the last 50 years who stood on the sideline could have won it. So that is 32 out of thousands, and probably 100 just in the Big Ten.
And this is the list of Big Ten coaches who have won a natty in 50 years:
Bob Knight
Jud Heathcoate
Steve Fisher
Tom Izzo
That's it. So the idea that more than half the current coaches could win one with "their players" , is a far fetched.
Wow! That list in itself is pretty amazing. Why can the Big Ten not win it all?32 coaches in past 50 years have NCAA championships.

@walt542 This topic has been hashed out many, many times on the various forums throughout the years. One consensus has been the style of play, and officiating, during conference season not being conducive to NCAA tournament play. With the influx of coaching talent the conference has seen the last couple years... combined with the NIL landscape swinging the money advantages back more towards an even playing field, if not more towards the B10... like football, I don't think it'll be too much longer before the B10 gets back to winning Nattys at a more normal rate. Obviously they have a great chance this year to do it. Michigan is the best all around remaining team. And Illinois is more than capable as well.

Dusty may will win a title if not this year another year. The guy is a flat out stud of a coach and will witn 25-30 games every single year. Michigan made an incredible hire. Hats of to them they know how to hire winners like when they hired beilien
