@ams66 Because they can! Those good [programs only typically need 2-3 guys each year, so they can blow all their money on the top guys - IU is gonna have to break in there and pay - maybe over pay, some guys. Im hoping IU only needs maybe 5 players so we can afford top go get the best ones.
How sad is it that the portal has become our new selection day as for as excitement!!
For those wondering about how crazy the portal market is going to be for big men...Sananda Fru is reportedly asking for $3 to $3.5 million. The crazy part is not Fru wanting that amount (I would like that amount as well). The crazy part is that a team will inevitably convince themselves to pay that amount for Fru. I do not believe Indiana will be that team. I don't know this for certain but I believe IU is willing to spend that kind of money and possibly a bit more for players with multiple years of eligibility that can also be instant impact guys. Examples would be Stefan Vaaks, Jalen Haralson. Those are just examples. You probably only have the budget to splurge like that on two and MAYBE three guys. If the determination was made that Fru was not worth being one of those guys, I certainly get it. That written, that important center position still needs filled and you'll have to spend on someone!
It is totally out of control but if you want a top big man you are going to have to spend 4 million imo

No. They (other teams) still have to pay the players they are retaining.
@surjay No - but, there has been zero talk of anyone leaving so far, so I guess there is a slim chance IU only needs 3-5 guys? Who knows. names go in every day so we shall see.
I think the portal not being officially open is a big part of it. You can bet that a ton of names will enter once the 7th passes. Also, most of our guys are not the types that would make a splash or draw a lot of attention so there's not much point to 'declaring' right now.
@ge-off There was plenty of talk about people leaving...it just had not happened yet. Jason Drake just announced. That's one and there's many more to come. Dorn might come back at a reduced price, maybe. Acimovic and Ristic cost next to nothing and given the market and the volume of players IU needs, one might come back. There are going to be departures and it has been hinted at several times...it's now beginning!
Drake will have 2 years of eligibility remaining, thanks to DeVries.
@bigmike Mixed feelings on all that... IF, its true they could have played at any point before the end of the season, and just didn't... the most logical thing that comes to my mind is neither were likely good enough that the staff thought they'd help them win games. I know I posted a while back that a healthy Harris would have equaled at least one more NET win... but its hard to imagine CDD not essentially forcing either/both players to play, if he thought they'd make big impacts and make the team better.
Obviously if they could have played, but didn't want to, and CDD allowed that... he did them a huge solid. But its really only a noble gesture if CDD felt he was sacrificing better chances at potential wins to do so.
Someday the schools will push for collective bargaining, to save themselves from themselves. instead of opposing it as they have.
Maybe not, if the schools only are in for a rev share percentage, and the insane part comes from donors, I guess maybe it's OK with the schools.

I am not really that big on rankings but Drake was ranked the 505th in the transfer portal ranking so he was not exactly highly thought of.
IMO if you're dressed and on the bench, you're an eligible player. You're getting a scholarship year and whatever NIL you agreed to. Whether you actually get in to the game is up to you convincing/demonstrating to the coach that you are going to help the team win that game.
Understandable. He's trying to break the record for most college teams played for.Jason Drake just announced.

Yep, got mixed up on who we were talking about...
So much for the "rules of the portal":
