Agreed, when you look at OSU for example we have nobody like Thornton. Take any other team in the top of the confernce and you can probably find at least a couple of players who are just in a different realm to anyone we have. That's the talent gap people talk about, IMO. Wilkerson maybe, but he's inconsistent.
@hoosiers94 Not enough time, not enough money, staff put together late, weak Portal, etc. Those aren't reasons; they're excuses.
This season has been a failure.
We have been a program of excuses for 25 years. But when we are paying top four salary in the big ten we should expect better than losing 6 of our last 7. Excuses are for losing programs.

I’m a firm believer IU hoops will never be great again- no matter who coaches. IU was ok w Crean, hired the most up and comer in Arch- Woodson was a terrible hire from the start, and DD is fairly well respected in coaching circles.
basically, when you reflect on the hires, Woodson was the only head scratcher of the group, and none of them have been able to get IU back. We are the Nebraska of college hoops and it isn’t coming back

Pretty much where I am at I think 21-12 and like a 9 seed is probably about as good as its going to get at iu. If we get really lucky maybe a sweet sixeteen every now and again. Our best chance ever to get a really good coach was when we hired sampson. We are now stuck with mid majors to pick from. At least we got football.
Next yr is the yr to evaluate DD. Not enough talent this yr.
and Cig is an anomaly! Can’t compare every coach to him.

I didn't bring cig up ... I responded to someone's comparison to him.. DD has not moved the needle an inch. And he won't next year. That's just another excuse
The excuse about he didnt know how physical the big ten was is a huge red flag to me. Wasn't it his job to watch tape and know this? It not some secret the big ten is physical league everyone knows this

High school players spend a lot of time watching college ball but actually playing at that leve takes at least a year of adjustment for most of them. CDD spent his career in small/mid programs. He may not have really been calibrated to the level of talent and physicality in a power conference. Or thought that smart play could overcome the physical mismatches (which it can, up to a a point).
All speculation, you may well be right that he just doesn't have it. But if he does, we should see some strong indications that lessons were learned, based on what we do in the portal and any other recruiting. If we don't, and next year looks much the same, I'd say it's time to move on. Two years is enough to at least establish a positive direction, in this era.

If he couldn't figure out that Indiana needed higher level talent to compete in the Big 10 then we are all in deep trouble. I'm not in the in-crowd to understand all the variables of how last years roster regarding budget, player desire to come to IU, etc. Was this the best DeVries could do? I don't have that answer.
I do expect a stronger, more competitive team next season. No excuses as the coaching staff is set in place and Carr has been hired to help.

Yeah that's really unforgivable. If he had just used the money he gave Bailey to sign a competent big we'd probably have a couple more wins and be safely in the field. He really screwed up royally with this roster construction and it may be hard to recover from.

No argument, it's a concern. But I posted it only as a possibility, one that could be correctable. Maybe it's not, and we've just got the wrong guy. But I'm hopeful that the people who say he's a smart and competitive guy are right and that he'll adjust. We'll find out soon enough.

Nope- zero excuses next season. He now has a GM, has seen the conf and talent required. Next yr expectation from me will be no worse than a 7 seed and single digit losses for the season- meaning 21-9 or better.
league will be down a little compared to this yr and he will have more than ample time for the portal
Only excuse might be if the NIL budget isn't there but if that happens then Indiana is no longer serious about basketball and we can all just move on.
Alright folks… do we really think DeVries, a college basketball coach, who just finished up a year at a B12 school, didn’t think about, or understand, the B10 challenge more than any of us did? Good lord. Of course he did.
He failed to get enough upper end B10 size and athleticism. But that failure didn’t happen because he didn’t know he needed them.
Tons of much more plausible reasons. Didn’t have enough money to get them. Targeted the wrong ones. Portal big market was abnormally thin. Staff wasn’t formed in time to get in on enough of them. Misjudged Reeds ability to adapt. Harris being healthy and giving as little as 5-10 minutes a game, like was the plan, would have been a big help.
It’s gonna be tough for him again this portal season, I suspect. He, Carr, and the money folks are just gonna have to accept that they might have to overpay for a big or two! He likely won’t have issues attracting higher level guards and wings. But bigs could be a big challenge.
You can think you understand something but if you haven't done it you might not actually understand it. I'm just saying it's a possibility, not necessarily even likely. And not necessarily the only reason. But if there isn't a marked improvement in those things, then I think it's getting safe to say we've got the wrong guy, or at least a guy who cannot overcome those obstacles. I'm not there yet, but next roster cycle will tell.
