@openwheel Cig had a handful of very good years prior to that, and did it at multiple stops.  He was on other major programs radar.  And Dolson created that opening.  He had to find the money for Allen's buyout.  Its not like some fortuitous event where the prior coach retired, and some fairy dropped the idea in to Dolson's head to hire an unproven, over 60 year old, that had never coached a high major team before.  Dolson hired him because his history, his mentality, and his approach fit what IU football needed, at that time.  He knew Cignetti would win more than he lost, at IU, and that's what he, and IU needed.  He was criticized by many when he made the hire because of Cig's age, and because he had never coached at a high major.  And when Cig came in guns blazing, most scoffed, if not made fun of him, and Dolson for the whole thing.  Dolson responded by getting Cig basically everything he asked for, and needed, to build a program.

IU turning the football program around wasn't luck.  Going to two CFP's and winning a natty in years 1 and 2, that was pretty lucky.  But Cig was always going to win, at IU, and Dolson knew that.

I didn't disagree with any of that. Dolson had the buyout of Tom Allen almost pushed on him by donors if the conversations around these boards have any basis? Someone said a donor. But surely Allen was gone no matter what, so maybe it was Dolson all the way.

My only disagreement was "He was criticized by many when he made the hire because of Cig's age". No he wasn't...

Or I was living in some alternate reality. Those who worried about the age were usually shouted down that it may work in our favor if he was successful. When 90% of people say 'wow, good hire for Indiana' you can't call the usual 10% criticizing age as any stress on Dolson.

Cig's prior successful stop was 8-5 and 6-5 at Elon, and good years at DII IU Pennsylvania. Nobody was beating down his door for that. Then yeah he ha a long good run at JMU. He was finally on a lot of radars then.

Doesn't matter - just saying Dolson didn't fire Tom Allen because Cignetti was available... So it was hugely lucky. Not some savant pick. BUT, he gets credit for it, the guy was 60 years old. So, yeah, NOT luck that he didn't blow it. With Dolson's resource work, we'd have won with some other good coach, but lucky the best one was available.

Oh and, "And when Cig came in guns blazing, most scoffed, if not made fun of him, and Dolson for the whole thing. " No they didn't. Most... enjoyed it. Some, whined. The country that had only the mindset "Indiana will always suck in football" made fun of it. And some, maybe many, Ill give you that, at Indiana who were down in the dumps about football, (but #### them for the decades of shit that we ate) or, those who actively held it back. Besides, has nothing to do with his choice being obvious or not.

I saw the comment about the Cig hire being criticized as well, and that wasn't what I remembered.  So I looked at the HSN thread....and the hire was immediately very popular.  One thing that interested me was that Gig was following Sorsby on social media before the hiring was announced.....

What may have confused the OP was that there were many names being thrown out just before the hire as the hiring process took a long time.  So there were a lot of opinions being expressed just prior to the hire.

I was a bit skeptical at the time of the hire, partly due to his age. But that was quickly proven to be unfounded.

But the fact remains that with an older person, there's a limited shelf life. Few coaches work into their 70s and health problems become more and more likely even if they otherwise want to. We'll be looking for another football coach within the next 5-10 years, almost certainly. Hopefully there will be a smooth transition to an annointed successor.

@mushroomgod Ha ha.... "how to let actual knowledgable posters know I'm not knowledgable"... without coming out to say it.  I was actually one of the first posters on this board to raise concerns about their consistency.  And I've never wavered from those concerns.  Beyond that, most of my "sunshine pumping" has come out because I'm combatting posters like you, Cav, 94... that make blanket, absurd, negative statements.  I know for some, its often done for effect, and its "rage baiting", as the kids would say.  But when a guy that is actually pretty fiery, having red face yelling moments in nearly every game, gets a nickname like Doorknob, or Dullson... from a bunch of message board experts... and anyone dares questions that... sunshine pumper, holier than thou...

How about you all are just wrong, on some of these things?

DeVries has proven, in the past, that he can coach the game of basketball.  He's had an uneven start at IU.  And the finish to the season was very, very bad.  And its a red flag, among other red flags.  But he has many "green flags" too.  We'll see where we go, from here.  He needs to show improvements, quickly, in a number of areas.  Its gonna be difficult for him to do so.  But if it were easy, IU would have found a guy long ago that could do it better.  And I suspect if he doesn't overcome the obstacles, and figure out how to markedly improve, he'll get fired... earlier than the last couple coaches have been fired.

Try to keep up.  Dullson is Scottie, not Durwood.

I was at the basketball game when he said Purdue sucks but so does michhhhagen and ahhhhhia state.  Looked at my buddy and said this guys nuts.   But I did love it.  Also said well classic IU going full 180 from love each other to f the world.  Then acknowledged that F the world fits much better at IU.

Archie proved that too at a lower level.

@arioznahoosier4554 True.  There are definitely similarities.  But there are also distinct differences.  DeVries took over two separate programs, Drake and WVU, and immediately turned programs that had been bottom of the conference, to being competitive.  Archie took over an already solid Dayton program, and it took him a couple years to improve them.  They had similar first seasons, at IU, but Archie inherited quite a lot more than CDD did.  Different times, Archie didn't have Portal and NIL to work with.  But he did have guys like Juwan Morgan, Rob Johnson, Devonte Green, etc... to work with that were already at IU.

Dolson won't wait out 4 "Archie like" years, if they are destined to be similar... I would bet a lot of money on that.

Yeah if he misses the tourney the first three years he likely gets fired. But if he goes say 22-12  and gets in as like a 10 seed he will certainly get four years that will be considered a big success.  The bar is so darn low just make the tourney at IU and you will be praised.

@mushroomgod Yeah, keeping up with you guys nicknames is a task.  Dullson should have been more obvious though, to be fair.  Not sure what logic remotely applies to him deserving such a nickname though.

@arioznahoosier4554 I don't agree with that.  He might get a 3rd year if he makes NCAA next year.  But he's going to have to show that the program is FOR SURE headed to competing for B10 titles, within his first 3 years, or I think he'll get fired.

@ams66 We got a national championship out of it and two years in a row of playoff football. What a great hire even if he is mediocre from now until he retires.

While I regarded God as a tyrant I thought my sin a trifle; But when I knew Him to be my Father, then I mourned that I could ever have kicked against Him. When I thought God was hard, I found it easy to sin; but when I found God so kind, so good, so overflowing with compassion, I smote upon my breast to think that I could ever have rebelled against One who loved me so, and sought my good.” C. H. Spurgeon

Agree to disagree but I think he gets four no matter what. Especially given how low the bar is just squeak into the ncaa and you get four. The program is in the gutter and it just making the tourney will be considered a hug success DD is never going to compete for big ten titles I can tell you that right now.

@vanpastorman Did not mean to imply otherwise! But I was not on the bandwagon immediately when he was hired. Nor was I for Devries, in fact. Of the likely candidates being discussed, I preferred McCollum.

he's the rage baiter.  All a matter of perspective... we're combating your ignorant sunshine pumping. And now you've all but admitted that we were right.  It's ok.

@arioznahoosier4554 I think he'll have to do a little bit more than "make the NCAA" I think it will have to be a decent seed and no question of being on the bubble. Honeymoon is over.
