@iu2win Agree but officiating is a thankless job and it's not going to get better. Officials typically start at the youth and high school levels and parents there are so abusive that most of them quit. I don't know what the answer is.

Not that it was one sided and it didn't change the outcome of the game, however, college basketball OFFICIATING IS TERRIBLE !!!  It is time to hire full time officials, that are fully trained, and consistent game-to-game.  The ability level of the players on the floor has far exceeded the officials ability to keep up with the action and make accurate calls.  There were a ton of missed calls and/or calls that should never have been made tonight.  One guy gets mugged and it's a play-on, the next minute a dude straight up and down gets called for contact.

I agree it's gotten obnoxious. It's the same at the high school level as well.  One trip down they call a foul with continuation and one next time down it's on the floor or no call. Or it's offensive.  Same action. Don't know how you fix it.  Human error and judgement.... otherwise we'd be in constant video replay mode

i would say it's worse in 5-8th grades than high school as far as parents. At least from my exposure.  But the refs don't want to be challenged at all which maybe they shouldn't be especially by a raging fan but they are woefully inconsistent

@hoosiers94 I'm not clamoring to volunteer to be an official.  Parents, and coaches, especially at the youth level, are a huge problem.  I think one of the biggest problems is apathy on the part of the youth officials.  Many of them are just there collecting a check, they want the games to stay on schedule, and go as quickly as possible.  So AAU events especially, have become rugby matches, basically.  So many kids come in to high school used to fouling like crazy, playing overly physical, etc... and the high school officials, I'm sure, are struggling to keep up with calling the games how they should be called.

When I get mad, watching my sons games, its almost always due to inconsistency.  You can have a crew of 3...2 of them are calling one way, 1 of them the other.  And if you get caught with the "wrong" guys under the basket on your defensive end at key times... sucks to be you, I guess.  And then just the inconsistency overall within games.  We played a game the other night.  2 ranked teams.  Game was called fairly close all game.  Maybe a little too close.  Last 3 minutes, completely swallowed the whistle and it turned in to a football game.  "Toughen up!"  I guess... but when a game has been called one way all game, and then just flips at the end, its a lot to ask these kids to adjust on the fly.  Our boys did (Better than IU did the other night), and won comfortably, but it got dicey for a minute or so.  Just have somewhat of an idea of what the other guys in your crew are going to call, and then remain consistent all game.  Shouldn't be too much to ask, no matter who it is, if they're getting paid, whatever other variables might be at play.

Nor would I want to... but they are woefully inconsistent and that's a big problem. The other issue is a lot of parents don't know the rules very well.
we also had a game last week. Against our biggest rival both teams very good. They are bigger , faster , stronger and can jump higher.  We are more fundamentally sound , higher basketball IQ and better mechanics , finesse , touch, good shooters. First half they kept the game under control blew  whistles game was clean. Well since we were away I'm sure the earful they got at halftime influenced them to "let them play" , which to a degree I prefer but within reason and in the spirit of competition.  That's not even close to the level of physicality it went to ... went from tied at halftime to us losing by 17.  Yeah "get tougher". Well to a degree maybe but call the game consistently and within reason.  Had to leave and walk out so I didn't run my mouth

and AAU.. yeah it's a war  and the refs don't care at all  I was doing the clock at a game last Summer in Atlanta  . We were the last game of the day.  I was stopping the clock as per rules , during a timeout ref came over me and started the clock , 5 point game mind you, and said don't stop it again or you forfeit   .  Now how's that fair to the kids I said ... he said I don't give a shit I want to go home

@hoosiers94 From what I've seen I would agree. And I'm not talking about just boos or "terrible call" from the stands. I'm talking about parents getting right in their faces, or waiting around after the game when they're trying to leave and confronting them directly, sometimes physically threatening them etc. It's just ridiculous. Coaches can be bad too but from what I've seen it's mostly parents. Of course at the youth level the coach is often also a parent.

yeah you're right I call it "daddy ball". :). I of course had coached for a while. I never berated a ref , first off wasn't worth it because usually you'd see the ref again.  And second wasn't looking to get into any fisticuffs over a game. By the time my son got to 7th grade I had him play for someone else. Just better for both of us.
but man some of these parents. Seen several confrontations that the police had to be called.

@vanpastorman A quick comment... I think Moody, Karvala, and Manhertz are more talented than most players on our current roster... when they were incoming freshmen.  Are they going to be as good, or impactful, as guys like Wilkerson, DeVries, and Dorn have been, as upperclassmen... kinda doubt it.  But they're longer, bouncier, and more athletic.  And overall, more talented than most of our current guys.  We'll need guys like Dorn, Sisley, Miles, to come back, and to get some more Wilkerson like portal guys, to play with them, so we don't have to rely on them to lead us or anything.  But they're going to be great additions to the program.  And all 3 of them will probably compete for rotation minutes next year.

Agreed - and more importantly, they are all athletic - which is, imo, the biggest weakness of this years team.

@iunorth I agree you will need upperclassmen until these young guys are ready to go. So retaining some of our players currently and hitting the portal hard are very important.

While I regarded God as a tyrant I thought my sin a trifle; But when I knew Him to be my Father, then I mourned that I could ever have kicked against Him. When I thought God was hard, I found it easy to sin; but when I found God so kind, so good, so overflowing with compassion, I smote upon my breast to think that I could ever have rebelled against One who loved me so, and sought my good.” C. H. Spurgeon
