Yeah, he's also a terrible fit. Hyper religious, Baptist private school type. Doesn't fit in. He turned down Kentucky for a reason.
If we somehow did pry him away, it would take millions in guaranteed, full buyout salary. His deal would make Woodson's look like a bargain. We'd be married to a guy that, at his best, probably delivers Crean results. High enough peaks, but floors that end up making H94 create a new screen name so he can drag him.
DeVries may not be the guy. I preferred McCollum, but whatever. Water under the bridge. If CDD doesn't work, and there's no obvious up and coming alumni out there, you try again.
What you don't do is bark up 17 wrong trees on your way. It leaks, you look like desperate losers, and good coaches choose other schools while you waste your time. There is a reason UNC and Duke went with long-time assistant alums when their HOF coaches retired. Stevens, Wright, Bennett, Few, aren't coming. Good young coaches at lower levels are lottery tickets. Some hit, most bust.
And if you hit, then you have to keep the NBA away.
I'm still here you ass clown ...
he's not uber religious. If you knew facts instead of your guesses as facts then perhaps people would appreciate your comments. Nice try. He isn't even Baptist
You're still here...so, we aren't allowed to converse among ourselves without your blessing?
Name calling. Calm down snowflake.
So, he's fake uber-religious? That's actually worse. Like, a lot worse.
@hoosiers94 We've swung... but we've missed. We'll see if they can connect any different than we have. Hubert Davis being their coach for 6 years is a sign they've had similar issues luring away big names...just like Kentucky did, like Louisville did, like Arizona did... all those schools went big game hunting, they all had to settle for less than what they went after. Its worked out quite well for one of them, very blah for the other 2. UNC, with Jordan, could be a different animal though. We'll see.
From what I've seen online, UNC fans are delusional. Basically talking about getting Dusty May if Brad Stevens turns them down. I would be absolutely blown away if either of those guys even seriously considers UNC. I could see them taking a phone call - but I don't see either of them jumping to coach UNC at this point.
One guy I was almost certain would get a bigger power 4 job was John Groce from Akron. That guy took Ohio to a Sweet 16 and almost beat UNC. Took over at Illinois and had some decent years. Comes back to the MAC and essentially dominates at Akron (I think they got the league's automatic bid in 3 of the last 4 years). He just took the Charleston job. Other than weather and a much better town, that isn't a big step up in terms of basketball. Maybe killing it at Charleston will land him somewhere like Wake Forest or South Carolina down the road. Who knows.
Saying Groce had some decent years at Illinois is an interesting take. He never once had a winning conference record and never finished higher than 7th.
He's not a Baptist? Does his Baptist pastor know that? You should let him, and the Baptist Press, know.
I'm not knocking Baptists. My grandparents were Baptists. They were good people. They wouldn't fit in at IU. I wouldn't fit in at Sunday school at the first Baptist Church in Connersville. Not judging either group.
Yeah he wrote a book. You found it. Good for you. He made money selling that book. He's an opportunist.. not unlike any other.
One of my best friends was in the same pledge class at Butler and I have been going on a weeklong fly-in trip with several of his fraternity brothers the last couple of years. The stories are freaking great. Opportunist seems to fit based on what I've heard.
Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for. - Seamus Heaney, Irish poet and likely Hoosier basketball fan.

Looks like Self is coming back for 1 more year (at least).
