@iugradman He was arrogant enough to think he didn’t need to.

In Cig parlance, he was neither hungry nor humble.  Not a good combo.

Cignetti and Woodson are only a few years apart in age but have vastly different work ethics and coaching philosophies. Cignetti is always trying to improve and fight complacency while Woodson refused to change and half assed the job.

@iugradman Cig was cleaning tables during the playoffs at IUP as a HC. That says it all

Woodson proves that mediocre results are sufficient for an NBA coach if the #1 & 2 players on your roster like you.

I don’t understand why Woodson never tried to actually recruit, as in attend high school basketball games and AAU events. Did he really think this approach would work? You couldn’t ask for someone to better sabotage the program than that arrogant SOB. Dolson and Buckner deserve a black mark on their legacy.

Not sure what Woodson was thinking but believe arrogance and laziness were the reasons why he failed to put the effort into recruiting high schoolers. Mike had all the answers because of his "NBA mindset." It was far easier to get players by throwing bags of money at highly touted portal players.

Woodson ranks at the tops as one of my favorite players. As far as a coach I'd take him only over Miller.

Woodson is one of the chief villains in IU basketball history. He created a very toxic environment and drove a wedge between the fans and the program.

I am glad I never saw him play because in my mind he and his buddy quinn are two of the guys who helped destroy this progam for good maybe. I have nothing good to say about Woodson at all I think he is an arrogant self centered narcissist. If he cared as much about this program as he claimed he did he would have been busting his a... 24/7 and yet he did not.

@arioznahoosier4554 That was always the perplexing thing about Woodson. How did someone who worked so hard as a player and was a favorite of not only fans but RMK also... end up being so disengaged as a head coach of the same program?

As a player he was a quiet, hard-working, no-nonsense guy.  One of my favorite top 2-3 IU players.  I don't like or follow the NBA so I didn't care what he did there, as a player or coach, until it affected IU.  Although I knew of his mediocre NBA coaching record, I was shocked by how lazy & entitled he was as a coach.

That one's easy.  Coaching as an asst and head coach in the NBA, plus age.

those with insane natural ability don't always have to work as hard as you think.

I read a guy who was a race engineer, and he talked about some sports car race (late 60s or 70s) where they had AJ Foyt coming in to drive for them. Foyt showed up, and after a long flight the guy expected him to go rest. But Foyt came to the pits hoping to get laps in. The car wasn't ready for hot laps so Foyt grabbed a broom and swept the pits, and after that  kept working wiping down tools and whatever. Guy said he was impressed just by that alone, helping the crew out.

Course he sort of lost some of the drive to prepare later in his career, but only because he was working at other hobbies.

The fact that IU hired a 64 year old with no college experience to try and and build back a broken program shows you just how out of touch and clueless they are. Most all older coaches have already been doing this a long time and built programs. To try an build a program you want someone hungry who is willing to work harder than they have ever worked harder in their lives not some 64 year old nobody else would hire. Its mind blowing.

He was the Big Ten MVP his senior year despite playing in only the last 6 of 18 conference games. That’s how good he was as a player.
