There is something seriously wrong with the coach evaluation process at IU. The coaches they hire are just dogshit. Mike Davis, Tom Crean, and Archie Miller all sucked after leaving IU. In fact, they were even less successful at their next head coaching stops.
There is nothing about IU that makes coaches fail.
IU started its path down when they fired sampson. You can call him slimy but the man can coach and now nobody cares about slimy anymore. IU did not have the guts to fight the ncaa like north carolina did with sampson and its too bad because the ncaa usually backs down on cash cows. If IU fought the ncaa like NC did i suspect sampson would still be our coach imo.

and many here , self included, call ND righteous. Even they would have fought it

IU started its “path down” when they made Mike Davis the permanent coach. They continued it by hiring Sampson who, in spite of his coaching chops, could neither follow the rules or tell the truth. You can argue about the rules he violated and whether they were “fair”, but he repeatedly lied to his bosses at IU. That’s the kind of asshole we never should’ve hired.
Then, Rick Greenspan and a few others fell for a superficial pretender in Tom Crean. He cleaned out and cleaned up the program in many ways, but he stared admiringly into the mirror far too often. His first boss fell for it, but his second boss sent him valentines of endless love, even when he was told he had to fire him. He then fell in love with Archie without dating anyone else, which turned into another disaster. Then, the former players got their way with Woody after we didn’t call him back during the Archie hire, and that didn’t work, either. Now DeVries.
Our issue has always been about lousy leadership at the AD level trying to hire people and not knowing what they’re doing. Dolson is better than the guys who preceded him, but that’s not a high bar. We’ll see where things are in two years, when DD will either get extended or get booted.
Schertz was always my choice after Beard - still on the show me stage with DD. But, how would we have felt had Schertz came in here and had a yr 1 like he did at St Louis? We would have wanted him gone, but look at yr, 2! Just saying, next season will be the test for DD.
Thats the problem when loosely looking at other coaches. PPL would have grumbled loudly during year 1.
Lets also not forget that DDV went 5-2 head-to-head against Schertz in the MVC.
Not hiring Dusty was the worst blunder this program has made in the last twenty five years, and there have been plenty of blunders. Good God. I wonder if Dolson and Buckner feel ashamed.

Why would Buckner be ashamed? He and his buddies made a ton of money on that grift. He doesn't follow college basketball and probably has no idea what Michigan is doing.
Most seem to assume Dusty would have come to Bloomington if Woody had been fired after Year 3 because he had "IU roots." If DM had received offers from both IU and Michigan, I don't see it as any sort of slam dunk he would have chosen IU. Although Howard's final season was UGLY, which program had been more stable and successful the previous two decades? Which program had more money to invest (remember, the deep-pocketed Woody backers would have just lost their guy in this scenario)?
I'm an IU fan who has no love for Michigan, but UM was and is a better situation from a basketball/career standpoint. Sure, his ties to IU might have been strong ... but stronger than the prospect of success?
What an utter indictment of the athletics department and culture if an alum who grew up 30 minutes from campus would choose a job at another school in the same conference. Inexcusable.
I guess it’s too much to ask for competence in both revenue sports.
If IU really does have up to $18 million to spend on its roster for the upcoming season then Dolson must have found some boosters to open their checkbooks.

UM has higher nil and much less pressure. They've also been infinitely more successful the past 10-15 years so recruits have actually seen them be good in their lifetimes.

They've been infinitely more successful the past 15 years because of 2 men and 2 men only...Adam Herbert and Quinn Buckner.
I can tell you that you are correct. Most seem to assume Dusty would have come to Bloomington if Woody had been fired after Year 3 because he had "IU roots." Fred Ass, Michael McRobbie, and Scott Dolson aren’t blameless either
