This staff is too smart to be violating any rules
There are rules in CFB?
@gros-louis I'm not saying he wouldn't start. Cig's mantra has always been, everything earned, nothing given. So, the pitch would be he comes here but has to win the job vs AM, and that's the same message to AM. Not out of character, and actually how I think it should be, and is fair to all. Frankly, from what I've seen from both, even though AM has been limited and with 2nd teamers, I think CJ would have the edge.
@d-b-cooper yeah, that account knows nothing about nothing
So you think a kid like Joseph, who could be all but guaranteed a starting spot at a P4 school is going to choose to come risk being 2nd on the depth chart for a year before he can transfer again? It's just illogical, in my opinion.@gros-louis I'm not saying he wouldn't start. Cig's mantra has always been, everything earned, nothing given. That account also feels IU is interested in a qb that plays for a Texas school in the big 12
Sawyer Robertson would be my guess
But I think that account is full of BS anyways
@gros-louis don't you think the IU coaching staff has a pretty good read on if AM is capable of being a starter next year? If they don't think so or aren't sure, they could explain to CJ that, while he would have to earn the job, they believe at the moment he would. If IU is ready to lob 2+ million at a QB prospect, I'd say that's a pretty clear indication of their confidence level in AM, wouldn't you? And, I don't know that they've done that, but it is pretty self-evident and there seem to be lots of rumors that we are sniffing around QB prospects. But, could just be clickbait too.
But, with IU's ascendance and Cig's success with QB's I'd think there would be a very strong attraction to want to come here. Got both Rourke to the CFP and NFL, and Fernando a Heisman and likely top 5 pick. If we got FM for $1.5-2mill, I'll bet he doubled that in NIL deals since and the Heisman and NFL draft stock is probably worth another 7 figures. I would think that would make for a pretty compelling case.
Sure, but FSU and ASU could say 'Hey, Colton, here's $2M+ and you're our guy."@gros-louis don't you think the IU coaching staff has a pretty good read on if AM is capable of being a starter next year? @gros-louis Right. And would you rather be Sam Leavitt, FSU's QB, or Fernando Mendoza right now? I'll bet Leavitt made more than $2mill at ASU last year, and doubt FSU's QB was far behind. I'll bet between the on-field success, NIL deals since coming to IU, winning the Heisman and improving his draft stock, FM is very happy to have come to IU. As I would guess Roark was last year.
I hope the staff is confident in AM and we are mostly seeking a backup, but should they feel we need to get a starter, I think we are a pretty attractive destination, even if our initial offer/NIL/rev share was a little lower. I just didn't guess that CJ would attract the top $$ like some of these other guys. His name's already out there and I've not heard any buzz around him like several other guys.
@kkott I say find an FCS or D2 guy, like a Chambliss, and bring him in with the expectation that he'll be battling Alberto, at best, for the starting role, but could very well be a backup guy. Then if Alberto gets hurt, or doesn't respond well to being the full time starter, you have a proven winner to take over. Maybe the success Chambliss has had, pushes the market for those types of QB's higher than 1M or so...but it'll still all be relative to what proven P4 guys are gonna command. If Sorsby is actually gonna get 4M+, then Hoover will probably find someone to pay him more, Leavitt will get a similar number, Joseph will get a similar number... Underwood will get more, probably... I don't know the FCS/D2 quarterback pool, at all...but I'm sure there are a handful of upperclassmen, that have led winning teams, that are good passers... that will be available. Find the one that is the best fit, and overpay a little bit, relative to the market for those guys, and bring him in. Less of a threat to Alberto, initially. Safety net if Alberto doesn't end up standing out as the guy.
@iunorth No inside information, but Jaden Craig from Harvard would be a nice add.
@iunorth I say do whatever the staff thinks. Seems to be a lot of smoke about them talking with QBs who would only be starter level. But, maybe that's just players agents contacting schools and if IU takes their call, maybe they feel it's to their advantage to say they've talked to IU. It's weird suddenly being one of the popular kids in school! But, if they are truly talking/pursuing guys like Leavitt or Mestemaker, I would say that's a clear indication of their confidence level in AM for next year.
