NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP THREAD- MIAMI

@iunorth - OSU was super rusty against Miami.  In the second half, Ohio State played more like it did against IU and won that half by more points than they did the whole game vs Indiana. OSU was cold as ice until their last possession of the first half. It was then that they went 12 plays 67yds and then missed the last second FG. OSU also had 2 turnovers, 1 of which was a pick 6. OSU's first 5 possessions were 3 plays punt, 4 plays punt, 3 plays interception, 5 plays punt, 3 plays punt.  That's not happening to IU.

In the 2nd half, Miami did a great job running the clock and iced out Ohio State who was looking like the better team. OSU only had three 2nd half possessions before they got the ball back with 55 seconds left in the game.  Miami used shotgun formations to run and throw short dink/dunk plays to keep the clock moving.

It's not that Miami is garbage, but they aren't icing away the clock by running the ball on IU.  That simply won't happen.  I also don't think IU goes in rusty and gets down 14-0 allowing them to pin their ears back on IU.   My point is, the OSU game is not a great one to use as a comparison here.  IU is a much better spot than you think.

@yothn Fair enough.  I think Miami's DLine and OLine probably had a fair bit to do with OSU being cold.  Slowing down A&M at Kyle field how they did, and then OSU... both teams weren't likely just off their games.  But on the flip side of this, Ole Miss didn't struggle much at all to move the ball.

Their games against Notre Dame, A&M, and OSU... scare me a little bit.  All of those teams have elite offenses, and Miami essentially shut them down.  I think IU has proven they're a better all around team, than any of those teams.  So I'm not predicting IU loses or anything.  I just don't like the specific matchup... because they're the type of team that IU has struggled against this year.

@iunorth - Oh I don't think A&M should've been a top 25 team, if I am being honest.  That win early in the year vs ND is all they did all year. They only played one game vs the top half of the SEC, and that was a against Texas, who they lost to by 10.   I REALLY wanted IU to play them because they were the biggest fraud in the CFP, yet no one talked about it because they were SEC.

The only games I use as a viable comparison is OSU and Ole Miss.   I just don't see many ways Miami beats IU in a neutral site game. Meaning, if IU can play without needing to use its silent count, IU doesn't lose to anyone.  That's clearly been proven over the last 2 years.  It's when IU has to go to the silent count where we (and any team) struggles mightily.  If we aren't doing that, IU controls them game and controls it by a wide margin.

I think the crowd will be around 50/50, even though the game is in Miami. Hoosier fans took over Pasadena and Atlanta. Now it's time for fans of America's Team to take over Hard Rock.

@iunorth I don’t think Miami is on par with OSU. I watched the game entirely and was actually pulling for Miami to win because I viewed OSU as our biggest threat to win out. Not to take anything away from Bain or their defense which is significantly better than Ole Miss, but their offense isn’t elite at all. OSu gifted them 14 points (1 pick 6, and allowing them to score at the end so they could get the ball back). You take away the pick 6 and I believe OSU wins the game easily. You could tell they (OSU) were very rusty from the layoff which is what had me worried about the Alabama game. IU won’t start the game like OSU.

I think Miami is comparable to Oregon even though I think on a good day Oregon is much better than Miami. Here is the way I look at it. If both teams play their A game IU wins by 10 points. If Miami plays their A game and IU plays their C game Miami will win by 3 to 10 points. If IU plays their A game and Miami plays how they did against Ole Miss this will look a lot like the Alabama and Oregon game in IUs favor.

@kelly_32 As a redneck, it's hurtful for you to refer to IU fans as Hicks. Please stop with such hurtful imagery.

@yothn Exactly. A&M was the biggest of the SEC frauds, just like MO and TN. Rode an early season ranking and that ND win to a top 5 spot. I don't know that they shouldn't have been ranked, but never higher than about 15. I think MO and TN should have never been ranked.

@olympian97 Thought OSU was also just too conservative on O. I think they were always afraid to put too much of the game on Sayin.

Gotta admit, it is stupid to be calling some other team convicts. And the they did it first on their boards is - I know you are, but what am I? - level.

That said, going on opposing message boards to cry about it (Hurtful? Message board throw away posts? Hurtful? ) is dumb too. Hopefully there will be some good interactions and information. I dont mind hearing the state of their fans.

It is not hurtful to me personally, but it is hurtful to others who don't deserve it. We had players' parents subjected to chants from Ole Miss fans about how their sons are convicts and thugs who belong in prison instead of on the field just last week. That kind of behavior is sadly a common experience for our team and has been for years. The fan bases from more academically inclined institutions like IU are much classier in my experience and we don't see the same BS in those games.

And this was only an aside in my original post, not why I came here to post. I've already had good interactions with you all here and appreciate it.

The whole “convicts” thing arose not from players who violated the law but rather from people who didn’t like brash, trash talking black kids. Sadly, you see that some people’s racial attitudes remain stuck in the nearest trailer park. Hopefully, the vast majority of fans are well past that nonsense.

No, that's wrong.  There were legal issues with a lot of Johnson's players.  And institutional control issues. It's well documented.

I doubt race had anything to do with it. Kid came up with a slogan, and since Miami had that rep, it resonated.

Didn't the T-shirt kid get booted from school because Notre Dame told him to stop (not wanting their IP used) and he just removed the Notre Dame specific stuff off it? And so Notre Dame still punished him? Or maybe he was going to be a basketball walk on and didn't get that gig? There was a 30 for 30 on it. I think he said he regretted it, but maybe because with losing his original inventory it was not a money maker.

@openwheel Yeah, that was one of my favorite 30 for 30s. Right up there with Rand University!

Believe you're correct, he was a manager for the bball team and tried out as a walkon and I think made the team and then they dropped him because of the revenue he made from the shirts. Think he still sold the shirts and lamented not having printed more. They sold them directly before the game and I think he felt he had to keep the money, because he still owed for the shirt production/printing.

So the new media conversation is whether IU is the best college team ever? Please stop ... you're not helping. 🤐

Feel free to resume the conversation on Jan. 20th.

If you were following the sport at that time, there were very obvious racial overtones to it. There also weren’t “convicts” on Miami’s team.
