Good lord, the sky is falling. We lost to Ohio State by 4 points.Hoover is not Mendoza but he’s not Daniel Jones either.

JC quarterback? Give me a break, the kid has big time pressure on him this year and through 7 games his stats are substantially better that Mendoza’s.18 TD passes and zero picks after 7 games, yeah he’s a bum🙄 This fan base cracks me up sometimes,we came within a missed chip shot FG to losing to freaking Akron 3 years ago.

@unclemark

If it’s us, “the” O-h-I-o $tate, and UCLA after the BT Championship all with one loss I think we all get in (the Playoffs) but woe unto the team with 2 losses as ESPN & the SEC are licking their chops at the thought of sticking it to the Big Ten if it’s at all possible (and they’d love to find a way to miss having to play a Cignetti coached team)…

We’d best dig deep and find a way to win out, in my opinion…

Such a dumb, tired narrative.

...You dont throw a bad pass and blame the receiver for not making an insane play to correct the bad throw. Ha

I am 100% sure that even Nick Marsh disagrees with you.

I'm 100% sure any player would and should take responsibility for any play. Hes a great kid doing what great teammates do. That doesn't remove common sense from the equation.

I'm currently listening to Rick Neuheisel explain exactly why you're wrong and I think he's got more experience and knowledge about it than anyone on this board.

@gros-louis Not sure if I posted anything about it right after the game, but I definitely was sending texts about how Hoover led him out of bounds.  And after watching it again a few times, and taking in to account the entire play... it was a dime.  He had to throw it earlier than I'm sure the play was designed for, so he was rushed a bit, and he put it within a yard of exactly where it should have been.

This one's on Marsh, if anyone needs blame on it.  Not sure that's overly necessary though.  He's a stud.  He'll make that play the next time it rolls around, I'm sure.  Marsh, Becker, Jeremiah Smith... they all make that play probably 95 times out of a hundred... this was one of those weird small chance errors, from a great receiver.

Now, on Hoover... a good number of his other throws, and reads were really bad...he does need to get better.  But that particular play was well executed, good throw, just bad finishing execution.

I don't know. In big games our offense is always the weaker link. And I don't think it is only that the defenses are great.

Shanahan's 'simple is best', works tremendously when owning a talent edge. Less tremendously when equal, and when the opposite coaching staffs are strong too and make good plans against it.  But, Saturday was a very good game from Shanny. We just didn't come through for him. And it wasn't that the plays he schemed were particularly hard to execute. Frustrating. But very nice to see some of these newer plays in the passing  game. Now, just throw in a few more complicated pulls in the run game. Need to get some overloads and open some holes.

Alabama and Oregon in the playoffs may disagree with you.

In my view, 95% of this game will be forgiven when our Hoosiers levy the biggest beat down against UM at Michigan Stadium in its history

40 point margin of victory is the number, lock in gentleman!

Treat little boy Carr like a dirty rag.

Weather is looking to be perfect for a blowout.

Was it a worse throw than the throw by Mendoza to Cooper Jr. at Penn St?  The Penn State catch took a heroic effort to get a toe down, and he even got both feet down..  This one just required a little more awareness.  Could it have been a better throw? Sure.  But with the heat on him, Hoover got it out where Nick would catch it and get his feet in, 9 times out of 10.

I'm a pretty novice football fan for someone who's been watching games for 45+ years, but I can't for the life of me figure out why we don't use our RBs and TEs more for short screens, wheel routes, etc... I've just accepted we don't, but man, I think it would help take pressure off our run game, pull defenders up to free up our WRs and could be super effective. Turbo to me has shown great hands and I think if we'd give him 4-5 opps a game, he'd break one for 30+ and TDs regularly. Missed opp to me.

Our tight ends are used a lot to help Ajani in pass protection.

I agree we haven't seen as many screens/bubble action as years past.

@gros-louis I heard his explanation, but it basically came down to "the next foot to hit the ground after the catch is his inside foot!", right? So explain to me how you change that mid-stride? It is his job to get his foot down inbounds, but his #1 job is to catch the ball. I believe it's much harder to get your foot in running down parallel to the out of bounds, tracking a ball overhead. I think like most anything else, it's on both of them. If Hoover throws the ball earlier, or flatter without so much air, it gets to him sooner and he's got no trouble scoring. Hanging the ball like that, where he's got to track it, all the time not able to look at the OOB line, made it much more difficult than if you're heading more perpendicular to the out of bounds. I think it's on both of them.

Frankly, in the post game when Cig said something to the effect that it's the QBs job to get the ball to the receiver as quickly as possible, I thought that was a direct reference to this.

No one needs blame. But we bring in playmakers to - make a play. Was there to be made, but we didn't.

And I 'm not sure Marsh will make it next time. In a similar play first or second game of the season he stepped out, instead of knowing where the endzone sideline was and getting his foot in. So at the time I thought 'we'll it's early, he'll make that play next time!'  But now was next time...

It's a team game and sometimes you lose. But it wasn't an overly tough catch, for a great receiver. Becker gets his feet in there.  But, Becker wouldn't have been able to toast the defender like Marsh did. Marsh burned that guy... So, they each have different strengths. I'll take Marsh able to get open on slants or shake and bake posts, if we can put them on target a bit more often. This pass though, was a dime. Catch it with a small reach left side of chest, instead of at centered above his belly button, we're celebrating. Shit, if we need better throws then that in tough conditions. We're sunk. No QB would regularly put it any closer than a foot from perfect.

One is no more important than the other.

I think the most important is to be in bounds, and adjust to make the catch. How is that less important?

Did the very pretty Willy May's style basket catch pay us points?  No, it merely showed how the ball was insanely well placed from when, where, and how far it was thrown. Even the arc made the catch easier.

Anyway, we can accept that the play was there to be made by both guys, neither did. But if Hoover can make that throw when under pressure the rest of the way, we will crush some teams.

@openwheel He's made a handful of sideline type catches, where he's gotten his feet down very well.  He's an elite level receiver, without question.  The touchdown catch he made earlier in the 4th quarter, not a lot of guys finish that play.  I don't know what to attribute the "mis step" on the last play.  Best guess is he relaxed, and thought he had more room than he did, instead of exaggerating his feet inside, or dragging his inside foot.  It would have made the catching part of the play more difficult, but he's capable of that.  I also think its a possibility he "felt" like he had made the clean catch, and at that point he's a runner, heading in to the endzone, so all he had to do was cross the goal line inside the pylon.  But as he stepped he looked down and realized too late?  Very weird play.  Its kind of like making a series of tough moves to get to the rim in basketball, and then relaxing and biffing the layup.  It happens.  Just gets amplified by a million in that situation.  He's good enough, that I doubt it happens again.  And doubt it even more if its a late game situation again.

Marsh is damn good.

We have a two headed monster at receiver. And the next couple guys aren't chopped liver.

Good luck upcoming opponents... 😎

"it's a simple game, you throw the ball, you catch the ball...."

except it's not as easy as it looks

we'll be fine
