MIchigan board has a 200 count thread saying that Haines is interviewing today or tomorrow.
@zeke4ahs Cig said in his press conference today that Haines has been called by other teams.
Betting markets don’t think it’s likely. 3% chance right now.
UM is a very complex situation and HC job for a young DC who has never been a HC. I’d be surprised.
Would Haines sign an extension just to leave a couple weeks later?
The timing would suck but Cignetti has a history of making good coaching hires. He hired both Cory Hetherman and Haines as DCs.
@iugradman I don’t even know if it’s true, but if it is, I imagine MIchigan reached out to him after the extension.
The source was someone on Reddit whose brother is on a group chat with some donors. Not exactly firsthand information. But this is how news initially leaks sometimes.
"Bryant (Haines), you know, had some calls, had some people very seriously interested in him. We thought it was important to be proactive. We also wanted to lock mike up, you know, who's very deserving, and I'm glad we did." --Cignetti on today's Zoom
If he is offered the head coach position at Michigan, he would be a fool to not take it. He may never get an offer of that caliber ever again in his life.Would Haines sign an extension just to leave a couple weeks later?

It would be mind boggling if he were to pass that up. Unless, he has a very clear path to taking over at IU. Then, making $3mil/year+ for 5-7 years and having the IU job to make $10+ mil could feel more secure and possibly financially stable. Certainly, that is HIGHLY unlikely but that is the only possible scenario that would make sense for him to stay.
If he got offered the UM job, of course he takes it. Assuming he thinks he can do it. That job has a lot of requirements he has no experience with.
Is he getting offered the UM job? Very unlikely.
Cignetti sure didn’t seem concerned about Haines leaving in his press conference. He said he trusted Haines to come up with a good gameplan to compensate for the loss of Daley.

Michigan is going to have to pay 7.5m a year for whoever they hire next, presuming its not a big name sitting HC. Probably a 5 year contract, fully guaranteed. If it doesnt pan out, a guy Haines age would be young enough to become a DC again and then get another shot down road
With that said, Michigan doesnt have a school president, and their AD is (likely) going to get fired soon. They are a dirty program - not a place you want to associate with unless they completely clean house

It’s for these ^ reasons why the “Michigan job” isn’t nearly as attractive as it otherwise would be.
Therefore, it would be quite risky if the next coaches tenure gets off to anything other than a fantastic start.
Would be too easy for the new president and AD to make a change in the second or third year.
...Then you take your 6-7 or more million per year buyout and offset that by a 1 million or 2 per year as a defensive coordinator again. It’s for these ^ reasons why the “Michigan job” isn’t nearly as attractive as it otherwise would be.

Pretty low risk... Succeed, or else make head coaching money as a DC.
And if it is someone, not Haines, who was a highly paid head coach before, well, now he is even more highly paid.

michigan ain’t michigan anymore - pro college football is a whole new ballgame
IU is a better job
