Cig takes the players he thinks are worth it. We're going to have a '27 HS class of around 18 of them. They're good players who will contribute. This is easy to understand. Cig knows what he is doing... apparently you haven't noticed.

Why not just continue with their same strategy? Get some hs recruits within our hs recruiting budget and if the price for developing a bench hs player is too steep, save that money for the portal. Other schools can pay to develop them and if they do get good, we can get them then.
@iugradman We’ll bring out the money bags for someone who’s proved it on the field at this level in the portal. That doesn’t mean you become one dimensional and don’t recruit anybody out of high school, and when you see a truly generational talent like Sales you go all in. This shouldn’t be hard to understand at this point. It’s the same production over potential philosophy that Cignetti has adhered to since day one.

People, and you're not the only one, are going to have to adjust to the new world of HS recruiting and rankings and such. I have no idea what UK gave Black, but let's just say it was a million dollars; he's probably not going to play in 2027. A lot of folks still get caught up in HS rankings, when it has never been more irrelevant, when you can go get an All-Big Ten caliber player in the portal for either the same or slightly more money. Until this Save College Sports Act passes and the there is a one-time transfer rule, HS recruiting is going to become less and less important.
We also just had a portal ranked #1 on On3 and #8 on 24/7.
Plus we retained all key players.
Important to keep the big picture in mind.

This is a whole new environment and we're seeing that a big paycheck is going to siphon off some players. His approach makes sense and, oh by the way, generated an undefeated and NC season.

gradman is the only person I've ever seen go into (almost) immediately dumping on the admin and/or donors after we had an undefeated National Championship. Shtick is going to shtick. If we go 9-3 he'll be calling for a Brinks truck and Cignetti's head. And somehow, he'll have a Glass slam in there somewhere.

It is in no way laughable to wonder why IU recruits players without knowing their asking price. Four stars command premium compensation. IU has to understand it may need to get into a bidding war sometimes. That is the way it works with high level recruits. Otherwise just work the portal or play Moneyball.
@iugradman No. It is a really bad take. They already are doing both of those strategies, but you still work the 4 and 5 stars. Set your number internally and stick by your limit/range. The smaller HS classes due to the portal means that you have more time and resources to dedicate to a smaller pool of prospects, so it’s not like we are scattered across the board like we had been in past years. Don’t overextend for a player that is likely on the bench and worst case you build a relationship with a future portal pick up. It is not that complex. It is just another example of a highly disciplined staff. They don’t flinch when the number moves beyond their comfort level. Onto the next guy and the show rolls on.

The staff knows how much these kids are asking for. So do other teams, who are free to offer whatever they want as well, which doesn't always line up with the market. Money isn't endless. Blow a million on a hs kid that hasn't done anything, thats a million he won't have on a kid that has been all conference a couple years who you know can play at this level... your taking the kid that you know is closer to a sure thing then not.
HS recruiting isn't nearly as important with the portal now. Even if we don't get these kids, we can't shut them out for picking another school because that kid might come available a year or two down the road.
