On Monday the NCAA Transfer Portal opens for college football players. The Indiana Hoosiers already have more than a dozen players entering the portal as of publishing. Indiana’s new coach is leaving behind a prolific recruiting run at James Madison University. In 2022, James Madison jumped from the FCS to the FBS conference. JMU’s recruiting, which was never ranked in the top-100 according to 247Sports, stormed into 86th for the 2024 signing class. For a head coach with an offensive background, Curt Cignetti’s teams sure do play good defense. The Dukes were tied for second in the country in sacks per game (3.7) and were second in the country in yards per rush allowed (2.1). Those two key stats helped them hold opponents to 19.9 points per game, the 21st best mark in the country. It was a continuation of what JMU did in 2022 when they held opponents to 22.3 points per game and were again tied for second in the nation in sacks per game (3.6).

It is being reported that Derek Owings and Nate Adams are coming from James Madison to lead the IU football strength and conditioning program.

I will preface this by saying that success in college football is not guaranteed and that there is still plenty of work to get down before the Hoosiers open up the 2024 season on August 31st against Florida International. However, the events that have transpired in Bloomington over the last week has inspired confidence that the IU administration has a plan for the football program and is executing it.

What Indiana's Offense is Getting with Hiring of Curt Cignetti

Curt Cignetti has an offensive background and his teams consistently produce on the scoreboard. Analyzing the past five seasons seems like a very good starting point with a decent sample size that encompasses his tenure at James Madison, with three seasons in the FCS and two in the FBS. One trend you see right away is that he prefers to have a quarterback that can utilize his legs, particularly in the red zone.
