Cignetti Filling Strength and Conditioning Roles

Written by T.J. Inman

Anytime a new head football coach is hired, change in personnel is expected. When the school that coach was hired by has been in the basement of their conference for three seasons, the changes go from “renovation” to “gut job”. While the coaching staff is still in the process of being filled out, it appears Curt Cignetti will not be retaining much of what was in place in Bloomington. It is being reported that Derek Owings and Nate Adams are coming from James Madison to lead the IU football strength and conditioning program.

Owings was the Director of Strength and Conditioning for the Dukes for the 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 seasons. He was at Texas Tech in 2018 and 2019 and worked for Central Florida prior to his stop in Lubbock. Owings was a graduate assistant at Utah State and has served as an intern at the University of Michigan. Nate Adams was the Associate Director for the football weight program at James Madison and will be coming to continue working for Derek Owings and Curt Cignetti.

The duo are expected to take over for strength coach Aaron Wellman who was hired by Tom Allen after Dave Ballou left Indiana for Alabama.
