Indiana head football coach Tom Allen was dismissed on Sunday morning just hours after losing 35-31 to Purdue and ending the season at 3-9 (1-8). Allen released a statement to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo! Sports saying:

Indiana University head football coach Tom Allen will not return according to a university source. It was first reported by Zach Osterman of the Indianapolis Star. Allen just wrapped up his seventh full season as the Hoosiers head coach. It was a season in which IU finished 3-9 (1-8).

Why They Played: The Hoosiers and the Boilermakers play annually for the Old Oaken Bucket as one of the Big Ten’s protected rivalries..
What The Game Meant: Records don’t matter in the Battle for the Old Oaken Bucket and this game is a chance for IU to have some momentum going into 2024 while also taking some air out of the Ryan Walters Era at Purdue.

The Indiana Hoosiers and Purdue Boilermakers both entered today’s game in West Lafayette at 3-8, knowing they would not be going to a bowl game and knowing the season would end after today’s contest. Regardless of the lack of success for either team, it’s always important to beat Purdue and win the Old Oaken Bucket. There were plenty of mistakes and the reasons for IU and Purdue being 3-8 this season were on full display but the two sides battled all afternoon in a tightly-contested game. As has been the case so often during the past few seasons, IU led most of the game but found a way to lose as Purdue prevailed 35-31.

The Indiana Hoosiers close out the 2023 season with the Old Oaken Bucket game against Purdue. While both teams enter at 3-8, this is still a heat rivalry. The Hoosiers enter as a slight underdog, however if they want to end the season on a high note and claim the Bucket, they will need to improve in defending the pass after being gashed the last two weeks. This week’s matchup to watch is Indiana’s secondary against Purdue’s passing game.
