Indiana Football Positional Preview: Who Fills the Big Shoes at Linebacker in 2018?

Written by: TJ Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)

The 2018 season is nearly upon us! Training camp has begun and the Hoosiers are preparing for what they hope is a return to a bowl game. One feature of our preview coverage is going in-depth on each position group and today, we look at a group that must replace a pair of terrific starters. The hope is that the improved depth and young talent will help overcome the loss of Tegray Scales and Chris Covington. Today, we look at linebacker.

There is no denying that Tegray Scales and Chris Covington will both be missed. Tom Allen acknowledged the team was now for players to step up and seize those roles. “You love them and they’re game changers for us and our program for sure. Tegray was one of the major catalysts for our turnaround defensively, but they’re gone,” Allen said at IU’s Media Day. “It’s bittersweet, you know. They’re just awesome young men, and I love being around them. But, you know their time has come here, and they’re now playing for two NFL teams, which is great. But that means someone’s got to rise up.”

The battle for the Old Oaken Bucket has heated up since the arrival of Jeff Brohm and for the first time in many years, both fanbases feel good about the overall direction of their program. The stakes for this game are always high with the Bucket on the line. With in-state recruiting battles and potential bowl bids up for grabs, to paraphrase the great Ron Burgundy, “this is kind of a big deal”.

Indiana Football Positional Preview: It Could Be a Mix-n-Match Affair on Special Teams

Written By Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

In order for the Indiana Hoosiers to get over the hump this season, they need to continue to improve on special teams. Last season, they were great in almost every aspect except kick return. This year the Hoosiers have to replace All-Big Ten kicker Griffin Oakes, which will be difficult. Along with finding a place kicker the Hoosiers must find a kick returner who can bring something, heck anything, to the table. So with William Inge taking over the full-time special teams coordinator duties, let’s take a look at the third unit of Indiana football.

Indiana Football Positional Preview: Can the Offensive Line Show Off Their Improved Strength After a Solid Showing in Fall Camp

Indiana Football Positional Preview: Can the Offensive Line Show Off Their Improved Strength After a Solid Showing in Fall Camp

Written By Evan McShane (@veryreasonable)

The Indiana Hoosiers struggled on the offensive line last season. IU had an abysmal run game last season despite finishing third in the Big Ten in passing offense. Indiana simply could not sustain a rushing attack during conference play. Injuries affected the offensive line throughout the season, impeding any potential consistency up front. This year should be different. The Hoosiers return nearly everybody on the offensive line. IU will boast more depth on the O-line than they’ve had in a while. Whether or not that translates to a drastically improved running game remains to be seen. The addition of strength and conditioning experts David Ballou and Dr. Matt Rhea have seemingly given the entire roster a boost. The experience IU will have on the offensive line this season is very valuable. With strongholds like Wes Martin, Coy Cronk, Simon Stepaniak and others, the Hoosiers offensive line should be drastically improved in 2018.

Morgan Ellison's Suspension is an Opportunity for Others to Step Up

Indiana University announced the indefinite suspension of sophomore running back Morgan Ellison. The details surrounding the suspension have not become public but indefinite suspensions typically are not short-term and it is reasonable to think IU will be without their expected starter at running back for the entirety of the season.

The Art of the Tailgate According to Brian Tonsoni

Written By Brian Tonsoni

What time is kickoff? A question that is asked by many. For some, the answer tells them when to tune in on television. For others, the answer helps plan when they will park and enter the stadium. For the tailgater, the answer gives them the number of hours for the tailgate as they are the type of fan who makes an entire day of a college football Saturday. The tailgater is dedicated not only to the football team, but to providing the best social activity of the season...the tailgate.
