The announcement that everyone has been waiting for was made Thursday afternoon as Tom Allen has named Peyton Ramsey the starting quarterback for the Hoosiers when they take on FIU on September 1st.

Ramsey battled grad transfer Brandon Dawkins and true freshman Michael Penix. Allen and offensive coordinator Mike DeBord wanted who ever won the job to be able to protect the ball and make plays. Allen said, "(Ramsey is) a young man that, as we go through this process I’ve been pretty clear about what we are looking for and the bottom line is that there are three things my staff and I talked about that we want from this position and what we are looking for throughout this competition."

Allen explained the staff's process in selecting Ramsey. "First of all" Allen said, "we want a quarterback that protects the football. That’s his decision making, that’s how he reads coverages, that’s how he distributes the ball, how he protects the football. That was number one. Number two was the ability to move the team down the field consistently throughout opportunities, whether it was scrimmages or team (drills) or those times throughout practice. Number three, we wanted a young man that the team believes in and that is very, very important to me. When we go through and we selected our leadership counsel earlier in fall camp, he was our leading vote getter by a landslide."

Ramsey played in nine games, with four starts in 2017. He helped lead the Hoosiers to wins over Virginia, Georgia Southern and Charleston Southern before his season ended in the 42-39 loss at Maryland. Ramsey completed 65.4 percent of his passes for 1,252 yards 10 touchdowns and only five interceptions. He added 226 yards and two touchdowns on 92 rushing attempts. He has shown great leader and his teammates should rally around him well.
