IU Will Raise the Victory Flag Against Ohio State If...

Written by Sammy Jacobs

After every win the Indiana Hoosiers raise the Victory Flag high over Memorial Stadium. There is a lot on the line for IU on Saturday, in what many are calling the biggest game in program history. Here’s how IU can come away with a victory in Columbus.

1. Keep Kurtis Rourke Upright

Ohio State’s defense ranks second in the Big Ten, behind only Indiana, in sacks with 30 on the season. It’s no question they will try and get after Indiana quarterback Kurtis Rourke. The IU line had been healthy up until the Michigan game when it was announced that starting guard Drew Evans would miss the remainder of the season. The Hoosiers have only allowed 11 sacks this season through 10 games. With a bye week to get Tyler Stephens up to speed at guard and Rourke another two weeks of healing for his surgically repaired right thumb, IU should be in pretty good shape to handle the OSU rush. Getting the ball out early and establishing a rushing attack will also keep the heat off of Rourke.

2. Take Advantage of a Beat Up OSU Offensive Line

Ohio State has had questions about their offensive line all season long. The Buckeyes were already without their starting left tackle Josh Simmons and it was announced earlier this week that starting center Seth McLaughlin was injured in practice and will also be out for the year. Even with the injuries and reshuffling, Ohio State has only allowed 12 sacks and 34 tackles for loss on the year. Both numbers are top five in the Big Ten in 2024.

The Hoosier defense has been a havoc creating machine in the backfield this season generating a Big Ten leading 31 sacks and 73 tackles for loss. They are well coached and bring different twists and stunts up front that could give a new center some issues.

3. Score First

The Hoosiers are 8-0 when they score first (duh, they have not lost yet). Putting the first points on the board will be huge on Saturday as 100,000+ Ohio State fans will be loud and ready for this game. The best way to silence the crowd and create doubt is to jump out to a lead and let the traveling IU fans make some noise. The Buckeyes have only allowed three scores (2 field goals and a touchdown) on an opponents’ first drive this season. The Hoosiers have scored on four opening drives this year, but have not scored on an opening drive since the Nebraska game.

4. Win the Battle in the Red Zone

It’ll be strength against strength as IU’s red zone offense takes on Ohio State’s top red zone defense. Something will have to give. The Buckeyes are only allowing scores on 52.2% while the Hoosiers have scored 94.6% of the time. Who ever is more successful in this area will likely walk away with the win.
