Indiana's Defense Gets Boost as CB Rashard Fant Will Return For Fifth-Year

Indiana fans can let out a big sigh of relief as IU's top cornerback Rashard Fant announced on Twitter Thursday morning that he will return for his fifth-year in 2017. Fant had a terrific junior season that saw him blossom into one of the conferences best corners. He earned All-Big Ten Second-Team honors, made 33 tackles, picked off a career-high three passes returning one for a touchdown, and broke up 17 passes. His 20 passes defensed was good for third nationally.
Fant's return likely ensures that Indiana will have two experienced corners starting when the Hoosiers open up against the Ohio State Buckeyes on Aug. 31. If Fant had declared for the NFL Draft it would have left the Hoosiers in a bind to replace him as the depth at corner was decimated by injury and IU would likely have had to reach toward a true freshman for major playing time.
