Hoosiers Kickoff Fall Camp with a Heightened Sense of Urgency

It felt more like early October instead of August in Bloomington this morning as the Indiana Hoosiers hit the field for their first practice of fall camp. Tom Allen and his team hit the field with a renewed sense of urgency after a dud of a campaign in 2021.

“The urgency, the attention to detail, how we walk -- because you got -- like I said, you got guys -- and that's one thing.” Allen said after practice. “Player practices over the summer are good, but they're also -- we're not there, you know. And so I promise you, it's not the same. Especially in regards to urgency in between the reps, transition from one thing to the next, and how you walk-through. To me, I just want to set that tone for everything we do. The tempo, hustle, the execution, the attention to detail. Yes, it's heightened for sure.”

That sense manifested itself in coaches holding players accountable for the little things. If a unit didn’t run out to their spot, a coach was on them making the unit do it again. If a rep was not up to par players would take the blame and get it right the next time.

“I think it's just the higher sense of urgency on those things. Even how we warmup, every coach meeting, everything we do we're trying to have the sense urgency in every little minor detail.” Allen explained. “It's everything that you do, right? So I tell guys we're really trying as coaches, and players respond to that. So I would say it's a higher sense of urgency in that area. We're not going to leave no stone unturned. You always want to be that way, but to me you just intensify, and that's what we're going to focus on.”

The feel surrounding practice is that 2021 is in the rearview mirror, not swept under the rug and not talked about. IU has a heightened sense of urgency heading into 2022 because of how 2021 went not in spite of it.

The Hoosiers return to the practice field on Thursday morning.

Other Notes From Practice

  • The Hoosiers were in shells today

  • Most of the work was on perfecting the fundamentals and individual work

  • There is a huge emphasis on getting back to creating takeaways

  • Lots of time spent on the punt team, there is a competition brewing between James Evans and Alejandro Quintero
