The Indiana Hoosiers are busy preparing for the biggest game in program history but “Portal Kombat” never stops. Curt Cignetti and his staff have landed another blow as they secured the commitment of former Maryland running back Roman Hemby to add to an IU backfield that will include fellow transfer (UAB) Lee Beebe, returnees Kaelon Black and Khobie Martin and freshman Sean Cuono. Hemby is a major addition and he comes to IU as one of the top running backs available in the portal.
Roman Hemby has one season of eligibility remaining after three stellar campaigns in College Park. In 2024, playing behind a subpar offensive line, Hemby had 607 yards and averaged 4.53 yards per carry along with an impressive 40 receptions for 273 yards. In 2023, he had 680 yards and averaged 4.79 yards per rush, 38 receptions for 349 yards and seven total touchdowns. 2022 was his best season as he racked up 989 yards and averaged 5.26 yards per carry as he scored 11 total touchdowns.
Roman Hemby has not lost a single fumble during his career and he will instantly add an elements of power, explosiveness and versatility as a pass-catcher to IU’s offense in 2025. The portal class is taking shape nicely, as all focus has turned to recruiting after IU’s first round exit from the CFP. The Hoosiers are still looking to secure a few receivers, a linebacker, a couple of safeties, offensive line depth and a quarterback. Hoosier Huddle will have ongoing coverage of any new developments.
