Dexter Williams Had a Great Vibe About Indiana

Offensive coordinator Kalen DeBoer and the coaching staff had their eyes on two quarterbacks that they wanted in the class of 2020. One was Hunter Dekkers, a prospect that committed to Iowa State. The second one was Dexter Williams, a 6’1”, 190-pound dual-threat from Macon, Georgia. Right after Dekkers committed, Indiana was ready to accept the commitment of Williams and the standout from the Peach State was ready to pledge to the Hoosiers.
“What stood out about Indiana for me was that it was a great vibe from the get go!” Williams told Hoosier Huddle after his commitment. “Both Coach DeBoer and Coach Allen are both really great guys and they did not try to overdo things selling me on IU. Plus, Bloomington is a great city and it reminds a lot of where I live right now.”
Dexter Williams knew he wanted to commit to Indiana after his unofficial visit earlier in June. IU was honest with Williams and his family. They really liked him but they wanted him to wait until after Dekkers decided. Once that was done and Williams was the top target, he joined the class the eighth member of the 2020 group. Georgia is a football hotbed and Macon is a talent-rich area but Williams has gone a bit under the radar because he plays in one of the smaller divisions of high school football. A star for Mount De Sales Academy, Williams passed for 1,023 yards and 13 touchdowns and ran for 1,544 yards with 18 touchdowns. He was a standout in other sports and in the classroom as well, earning interest from Army and the Naval Academy.
“The best way to describe my style of play is that I WIN! Using all the tools and weapons in my arsenal that God gave me mentally and physically, I do whatever it takes to be the victor every time I step in between those white lines. I can throw but I can also run just as well and keep the chains moving every series,” Williams told Hoosier Huddle.
He is fired up to be a member of the 2020 recruiting class and becoming a Hoosier but he has a senior season to take care of first and Williams is ready to do what it takes to improve himself before coming to Bloomington.
“Heading into my senior season I want to focus on all the very minute things of the game. I want to focus on being able to complete every pass I attempt and also place balls where only my receivers have a chance to grab it. My goal is to have a completion percentage of 70% or better.”
Williams is raw as a quarterback prospect and he is expected to be able to arrive in Bloomington and redshirt behind Michael Penix, Jack Tuttle and Peyton Ramsey. However, Williams is a versatile athlete and if, for an unforeseen reason, quarterback does not work out or IU feels he is a better fit elsewhere, he could contribute at other positions. The expectation though, is that IU has landed an athletic and mobile dual-threat quarterback with a strong arm and the leadership skills you look for in a signal-caller and they landed one of their top targets at the game’s most important position.
