Countdown to 2020 IUFB Kickoff: 94 Days Part 2 (Haydon Whitehead)
/Written by: Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)
The 2020 edition of the Hoosier Huddle Countdown is underway! We will double dip on Day 94 as two established Hoosiers don the number. We have already read about DeMarcus Elliott and now it is time to turn our attention to sixth-year senior Haydon Whitehead who is one of the best punters in the Big Ten.
Name – Haydon Whitehead
Position – Punter
Year/Hometown – Redshirt Senior from Melbourne, Australia
Height – 6’2”
Weight – 219 pounds
The Hoosiers return one of the best punters in the Big Ten in 2020 with Haydon Whitehead being granted an extra year of eligibility. The sixth-year senior was Honorable mention All-Big Ten in 2019 after averaging 42.5 yards per punt. He landed 22 punts inside the twenty yard-line with 14 landing inside the 10 yard-line and six landing inside the five yard-line.
Whitehead has been a Ray Guy Award candidate the previous two seasons for the nation’s best punter. He has a career average of 41 yards per punt and has pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line.
The Hoosiers have a new special teams coordinator in Kasey Teegardin who is making it his mission to show his players just how important special teams are to the success of the football team. He loves having a senior leader like Whitehead to push the rest of the group.
“The nice thing about it is like you said, you have a guy like Haydon Whitehead returning and knows what's expected of him.”
The expectation surrounding Whitehead in 2020 is for the sixth-year senior to again be one of the top punters in the conference and to be in the running for the Ray Guy Award late in the season.
