Written by T.J. Inman

Happy Father’s Day! With 76 days until IU Football, dads can take some time out to teach their families about one of the newest Hoosier offensive linemen Evan Lawrence.

2024 Countdown to Kickoff: #76 – Evan Lawrence

Height: 6’7”

Weight: 250 pounds

Hometown: Danville, IN (Danville Community High School

Class/Position: Freshman/Offensive Line

Offensive line is a position of constant need in college football. Every school is always on the lookout for big guys that could develop into starting-caliber offensive linemen and most schools try to sign at least a few offensive line prospects in each high school recruiting class. IU’s new coaching staff was completely overhauled but they did keep one position coach from Tom Allen’s staff: offensive line coach Bob Bostad. Bostad signed four linemen to add to his position group including a pair from Wisconsin (Mitch Verstegen and Austin Leibfried) and 6’4” Adedamola Ajani from Speedway, Indiana. The most intriguing addition in the offensive line class is undoubtedly 6’7” Evan Lawrence. Lawrence, a native of Danville, was nearly a four-star prospect and chose IU over offers from several MAC schools but that offer list would have grown substantially if the Hoosiers had not wrapped up Lawrence’s commitment early in the process.

Evan Lawrence is an outstanding athlete that came into his body later in high school. He was a tight end for Danville High School until later in his time there and he is raw as a lineman. The comparisons to former Hoosier Jason Spriggs are inevitable as they have a similar lean body build and moved to offensive line after starring at tight end. Much like Spriggs, Lawrence played basketball in high school as well. His footwork and agility stand out and once he adds to his current 250-pound frame, the physical tools are there to develop into a good tackle down the line. Ideally, the Hoosiers would be able to play Carter Smith at left tackle for another couple of seasons and then move a developed Evan Lawrence right into the starting lineup. Of course, anything can happen in portal land but that would be a very good outcome for Indiana football. Lawrence will be expected to redshirt the coming season as he works to put weight on his frame.
