2024 Countdown to IUFB Kickoff: 43 Days (Derek McCormick)

Written By Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

The Hoosier Huddle Countdown is at 43 days and counting until the Hoosiers kickoff against the FIU Golden Panthers. Today’s featured player is in a battle for the starting spot for place kicking, ULM transfer Derek McCormick.

COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: #43 Derek McCormick

Height: 6’4”

Weight: 210 pounds

Hometown: Port Charlotte, Florida (Port Charlotte)

Previous School: ULM

Class/Position: RS Senior

The Indiana Hoosiers are looking for someone to step into the place kicking role that was vacated by Chris Freeman after Curt Cignetti took over in December. McCormick comes to IU from ULM where he kicked in 11 games. He was solid on extra points, connecting on 16-of-17 attempts. McCormick has struggled with field goals in his collegiate career, but improved to be more consistent at ULM. Prior to getting to ULM, McCormick only hit 15-of-29 field goals for Ave Maria, although he did set the school record for longest field goal at 55 yards. With ULM he improved to hit 10-of-12 field goals including a couple 50-yard attempts.

He has a big leg and can handle kickoff duties as well. McCormick attempted one field goal in the spring game and missed, but the competition is still wide open and his big leg could give him the edge over the other kickers on the roster.

The Hoosier Huddle Countdown to Kickoff continues each and every day so be sure to check back often for the latest profile piece!
