2023 Countdown to IUFB Kickoff: 60 Days (Max Longman)

The 2023 edition of the Hoosier Huddle Countdown is officially underway! We are counting down from 100 to the beginning of the 2023 Indiana University football season. Each day, we will look at one (or two) players on the current Indiana football roster and highlight the player’s role in the upcoming season.
Name: Max Longman
Hometown: Portage, Michigan/transfer from University of Massachusetts
Position: Offensive Line
Year: Redshirt Senior
Height/Weight: 6’4”/316 pounds
The Indiana Hoosiers knew they had to improve on the offensive line. Tom Allen hired a new offensive line coach as Bob Bostad joined the staff after a very successful tenure at Wisconsin. Matthew Bedford is coming back from injury and should strengthen the starting five. They landed a few well-regarded freshmen that will increase the depth. The final piece they could address before developing the returning players in the offseason was via the transfer portal. Max Longman was that final puzzle piece. Longman is a transfer from the University of Massachusetts, a place he started 24 games and was generally rated as the program’s top offensive lineman.
Max Longman is a native of Portage, Michigan and he committed to UMass prior to the 2019 season. Longman missed his freshman season and then started all four of the team’s shortened season games in 2020. Longman stood out in 2021 with a move from guard to tackle. He started seven games at left tackle and five games at right tackle as the Minutemen rushed for more than 150 yards in six different games. Longman started eight games as a left tackle in 2022 before entering the transfer portal for his redshirt senior season.
Longman has played both guard and tackle and the versatility is undoubtedly attractive in a depth piece. Tom Allen spoke excitedly about him in December and was happy to add his veteran presence to the group.
“Getting to know his mom when she came on his visit and just a guy that fits with us. You know, tough, hard-nosed. Just brings that maturity and that experience and that grown-man strength and the ability to come in here and play.”
It is unlikely Longman starts but he’ll be a valuable member of the two-deep and his ability to play guard or tackle will be utilized by the program.
