Less than five weeks separates us from the kickoff of the 2021 IU football season. Today we are taking a look at running back Davion Ervin-Poindexter, a player who turned heads in spring practice. He will be wearing number 22 this season.
Name: Davion Ervin-Poindexter
Hometown: Merriville, Indiana
Position: Running Back
Year: Redshirt Junior
Height/Weight: 5’11”/190 pounds
Ervin-Poindexter is entering his third season with the Hoosiers after joining the team as a walk-on in 2019. While he did not see any game action in 2019, he did play in all eight games in 2020 and was named the Chris Beaty Outstanding Walk-On Player of the Year.
Indiana head coach Tom Allen took notice of Ervin-Poindexter in spring practice this year. ““He’s one of those guys where, I remember even a year ago when we were in fall camp, there were a couple times where I was like ‘man.’ He’s got really good suddenness to him. Really good ball skills, he can catch the ball out of the backfield and make some really good cuts. He’s quick, explosive, he’s tough.” Allen said.
Ervin-Poindexter’s high school head coach was not surprised at the success he was having at the next level. He said, “\all he needed was an opportunity and a chance at the next level,” continued Badke. “We are very proud of Davion and appreciate IU for the opportunity. Coach Allen and his staff have been amazing to work with.”
Ervin-Poindexter played primarily on special teams and that will be his role again in 2021. However, with a running backs coach who has more of a knack for having a true running back rotation than previous coaches could reward him with some carries in the fall.
