Indiana continues to play some of their best football all season. Yes, I’m even comfortable in saying that after a close loss to no. 3 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. Michael Penix is playing extremely well thought out, athletic football. The defense is humming for the most part, and the offensive line, while giving up a few unwanted hurries, certainly isn’t in danger of being the worst ever. The Ohio State game was certainly a wakeup call for the Hoosiers. Not in the sense that they had to drastically change how they’re playing, but that they’re actually a lot closer than a lot of people think to taking over the Big Ten and challenging the perennial powerhouse Ohio State.

Suffering a loss in a sporting event is not the end of the world or even the season. Indiana’s season did not end with their 42-35 loss. The Hoosiers (4-1) still have four Big Ten games plus a bowl game left in the 2020 season. While the loss to the Buckeyes was disappointing, it’s how the Hoosiers will respond this weekend against the Maryland Terrapins (2-1).

The Indiana Hoosiers had a grand total of 27 sacks in the 13 games they played during the 2019 season. Head Coach Tom Allen and Defensive Coordinator Kane Wommack knew they needed to find ways to generate more pressure on the quarterback if their defense was going to play to its potential. They spent the offseason finding some creative ways to use their personnel to bring heat to the opposing quarterback.

Indiana University head football coach Tom Allen has a unique background. He was born and raised in the state of Indiana and began his coaching career in the Hoosier state. After success at Ben Davis, he chose to branch out and began coaching in the state of Florida. His professional aspirations took him to a few different stops in the Sunshine State and he developed strong connections that he quickly began tapping into as soon as he became the defensive coordinator for Indiana.

That was defensive coordinator Kane Wommack’s goal last year— to create three takeaways per game. In his second year at the helm of Indiana defense, Wommack and his guys are doing just that.
On Saturday night, the Hoosiers chances were reinforced by the three takeaways and three other fourth down stops the defense created which led them to a 37-21 win in Piscataway.

Indiana travels to New Jersey on Saturday to face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and the Hoosiers need to leave the accolades they received last week at the gate. Indiana has had a history of following up “program changing” wins with clunkers, but this group may be special. They are focused on Rutgers, a team who is vastly improved from a season ago.

What The Game Meant: In a short season with no non-conference games, a win could propel either team to a special season. For the Hoosiers, the win is the first time they beat a top-10 team since 1987 and the first time at home doing that since 1967. Tom Allen checked boxes last season and just checked a big one off the list on Saturday.
