There’s been some turnover and inconsistency from the linebacker position for Indiana the past couple years. Players like Cam Jones, James Miller, and Aaron Casey were new to full-time linebacking responsibilities in 2019 after serving in mostly backup roles prior, and at times it showed. But with a strong core of experienced players returning in 2020, Tom Allen and defensive coordinator Kane Wommack have challenged the linebackers to take the next step. This year, they feel they have a group full of impact players.

Tom Allen has said it at every stop of his coaching career, “if you want to have a great defense, you better have great linebackers.” The good news for the Hoosiers is that they have the best depth at that position since Allen joined the IU football program in 2016.

Why They Played: The Hoosiers and Volunteers were selected to play in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl. It was their second all-time meeting on the gridiron.
What The Game Meant: The game was a chance for the Hoosiers to cap of a fantastic season with a ninth win (that would match the program high), a win over an SEC team and end a 28-year bowl victory drought. However, none of those things happened and unfortunately, some fans will only remember the 2019 season for IU blowing a 22-9 late lead.
Matchup to Watch Week Thirteen: Indiana’s Front Seven vs. Shea Patterson

The Indiana Hoosiers play host to the No. 13 Michigan Wolverines on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. The Hoosiers have lost 23-straight games against the Wolverines, but if the Hoosiers can win this critical match-up that streak can end on Saturday. That match-up is how Indiana’s front seven handles Michigan’s quarterback Shea Patterson.

Why They Played – The Hoosiers and Huskies play annually as members of the Big Ten East.
What the Game Meant – Indiana performed admirably, particularly on offense, as Michael Penix showed the potential to become a bonafide star. However, the Hoosiers made a couple of critical mistakes and ultimately came up short. The loss dropped them to 3-2 and Michigan State improved to 4-1 and kept the Old Brass Spittoon.
