Much of the offseason discussion around Indiana’s defense has centered around how the Hoosiers can replace linebacker Micah McFadden. The question is fair, certainly, but with experienced guys returning and Indiana’s heavy investment at the position in the transfer portal this offseason, the position group still projects as one of the stronger rooms on the defense.

Much of the offseason discussion when it comes to the Indiana defense has boiled down to one question: how will Indiana replace the heart and soul of its 2021 defense, Micah McFadden?

The Indiana Hoosiers entered the 2021 season opener at Iowa with a national ranking, high expectations and lots of attention centered on how they would follow up their exceptional 2020 campaign. Before the first quarter was over, the bloom was off the rose and the Hoosiers never recovered. They limped to a miserable 2-10 record and the outside view of the program has reverted back to one of pessimism and non-existent expectations. With the transfer portal, players can leave a floundering squad in search of greener pastures.

Big Ten Football Media Day takes place this upcoming week (July 26/27th) at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. This is an annual event that all Big Ten teams participate in. The team will be represented by their head coaches along with three players. The Hoosiers will be up on Day 1 of the Media Days. Head Coach Tom Allen brings along Tight End AJ Barner, Linebacker Cam Jones, and Cornerback Tiawan Mullen. Compared to last year, this Hoosiers team will not have as much attention/pressure, but you can rest assured that the media especially the local media will be coming with questions. This is a make-or-break year for Allen and his program. He will look to get off to a good start with the media and make good early impressions. That said, these are five questions heading into Big Ten Media Day for our Hoosiers.

The Indiana Hoosiers will have to replace the heart and soul of their linebacker room and defense as Micah McFadden is off to chase his NFL dreams. The Hoosiers will also be under the new direction of defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Chad Wilt. While Wilt has not exclusively coached linebackers, he has been a coach for over 20 years and will have Tom Allen calling the plays on defense.
