Since being named head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers football program in December of 2016, Tom Allen has come up with a singular word to try and set a theme for the upcoming season. It is based off of the book One Word That Will Change Your Life by Jon Gordon.

According to Gordon’s web page “One Word creates clarity, power, passion and life-change. The simple power of One Word is that it impacts all six dimensions of your life – mental, physical, emotional, relational, spiritual, and financial. Simply put, One Word sticks. There is a word meant for you and when you find it, live it, and share it, your life will become more rewarding and exciting than ever.”

Allen chose ‘Breakthrough’ in 2017, ‘Finish’ in 2018, ‘Grit’ in 2019 and ‘Relentless’ in 2020. After back-to-back winning seasons and bowl appearances Allen announced on Sunday that IU’s word of the year is ‘Chase’.

On Allen’s Twitter post, he attached a definition of ‘Chase’. “An earnest or frenzied seeking after something desired.”

Chase is a very appropriate word for the Hoosiers for the upcoming 2021 season. After accomplishing some of the goals Allen has set for this Hoosier football program, they want to chase bigger targets. The Hoosiers are still chasing a win over Ohio State, a Big Ten title and their first bowl win since 1991.

The ‘Chase’ begins in the offseason with training and spring practice before fall camp leads into Indiana’s scheduled opener on September 4th at Iowa.

Allen has led Indiana to a 24-21 record and has three wins over top-25 opponents. The Hoosiers finished the 2020 season 6-2 and 12th in the AP Top 25.
