Indiana Athletics is continuing their ‘Hoosier Classics’ series on Thursday night by showing a record setting win for the Hoosiers against the Wisconsin Badgers in 2001. The 0-3 Hoosiers traveled to Camp Randall to take on the 3-2 Wisconsin Badgers in an early October conference matchup. The 2001 season was interrupted by the terrorist attacks on September 11th and Indiana’s game against Kentucky was pushed back until December. The Hoosiers started the season with three-straight losses to North Carolina State, Utah and Ohio State. Indiana was desperate for a win at Wisconsin. The Badgers had taken six-straight against the Hoosiers, but on this day they could not contain the Hoosier offense.
Led by seniors quarterback Antwaan Randle El and running back Levron Williams the Hoosiers blitzed the Wisconsin defense with a 32-point first quarter and never looked back. The Randle El-Williams tandem accounted for 602 total yards and seven touchdowns as the Hoosiers registered their first victory of the year.
Levron Williams’ six touchdowns rushing is still a school record today.
The Hoosier defense was led by Justin Smith who tallied 11 total tackles and three tackles for loss. The Hoosiers forced four takeaways as the Badgers fumbled three times and Wisconsin quarterback Brooks Bollinger threw an interception to Michael Hanley. The Indiana special teams blocked a punt which was taken for a touchdown by Duane Stone.
Indiana was not without their own flaws as kicker Bryan Roberson missed three extra points and Wisconsin’s Joey Boese scooped up a fumble for a touchdown.
This game re-airs Thursday night (April 16) at 7pm ET on Indiana’s facebook page.
