In a report that came out Monday night by Indianapolis Star report Zach Osterman, Indiana University athletic director Fred Glass told the Indy Star via text message that “I expect to do a new contract with Tom.” Allen has led Indiana to a 7-2 (4-2) record through the first nine games of the 2019 season and currently has a career record of 17-17 at Indiana.

According to quotes from after the Hoosiers win at Nebraska, Glass told the Indy Star that “If the ball had bounced the wrong way and we’d ended up with five wins again, I’d still have wanted to extend him.”

Glass added that, “I see what’s going on with this team. Eighty of our 115 guys are freshmen and sophomores. They represent the two greatest classes in the history of IU football recruiting.”

Allen was hired on as the Hoosiers defensive coordinator by former Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson prior to the 2016 season. Allen led the biggest defensive turnaround in the country that season and helped lead the Hoosiers to a Foster Farms Bowl berth. Prior to the bowl game Allen was named head coach of the Hoosiers after Kevin Wilson resigned due to “philosophical differences” between him and Glass. Allen went 5-7 in his first two seasons.

Allen’s current contract runs through the 2022 season and pays hime $1.8 million per season, the lowest of any Big Ten coach. Allen does have bonus clauses that pay him $100,000 for every win over five, which means with his seven wins in 2019, Allen will receive $200,000 in bonus money.

Tom Allen’s name has been floated around a couple of different outlets, including Sports Illustrated and the Tampa Bay Times as a candidate for the recently vacated Florida State job.

One piece of language that should be pointed out is that Fred Glass uses the words “new contract” instead of an extension of the current contract.
