Indiana Hoosiers redshirt freshman kicker Griffin Oakes was named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week for his record setting performance against the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday. Oakes hit three of his four field goal attempts including a school record 58-yard field goal right before half time. This field goal broke the record of Scott Bonnell’s mark of 55-yards set way back in 1989 at Michigan. Oakes’ three field goal performance was the first for the Hoosiers since Mitch Ewald connected for three against Penn State in 2012. Oakes topped off his special performance by hitting all three of his kickoffs for touchbacks. Oakes is the second Hoosier is as many weeks to receive a weekly honor, joining Tegrey Scales who won the Big Ten Freshman of the Week Award for his performance against Missouri.
