A source confirmed to Hoosier Huddle Wednesday night that the Indiana Hoosiers will hire Ron Burton to fill their defensive line coach vacancy. The position opened when Mark Hagen left to take the same position at Texas last week. Burton has been Michigan State’s defensive line coach since 2013. Burton is a familiar face around Bloomington after serving as the Hoosiers linebacker coach from 1997-2001 for Cam Cameron.
Burton began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of North Carolina in 1992 after a four-year stint in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys, Phoenix Cardinals and Los Angelos Raiders. Burton was a defensive lineman for UNC from 1982-1986. Burton coached defensive backs at Moorehead State in 1994 and linebackers at Eastern Michigan from 1995 to 1996. After his stint at IU, Burton spent the 2002 season coaching the defensive line at Grand Valley State before spending the next decade (2003-12) at Air Force in the same position.
