The NCAA Football Oversight Committee is getting ready to approve a six-week plan that leads to an on-time start for the 2020 college football season. The plans have five phases starting with “Voluntary and Virtual Activities” and culminating with the beginning of the 2020 regular season on September 5th.
The first phase of this plan is labeled “Voluntary and Virtual Activities” which goes “from June 1 until 25 calendar days (July 12) before the school’s first permissible preseason practice date, only voluntary and virtual nonphysical activities (up to eight hours per week) are permissible.
The second phase is labeled “Summer Access” calls for “required summer athletics activities (summer access) may begin 25 calendar days (July 12) prior to the first permissible preseason practice date”. It also says that student athletes can spent “eight hours of weight training, conditioning and film review (not more than two hours).
The third phase is called “Summer Access with Walk-Throughs and Meetings”. It gives the student-athletes permission to participate in walk-throughs and meetings. It begins 14 calendar days before the school’s first permissible practice date.
“Preseason” which is the fourth phase will begin for teams 29 days before the team’s first scheduled game. For Indiana, that date would be August 6th, since the Hoosiers play on September 4th. IU would be allowed to start “Summer Access” on July 12th and “Summer Access with Walk-Throughs” on July 23rd.
This is document provides a real clear map to the start of the 2020 season. However, it should be noted, that the situation remains fluid and adjustments could be made at any time. The Hoosiers are currently in the middle of their first wave of athletes returning to campus for voluntary workouts.
