Hoosiers Safety Drafted by the Denver Broncos in Fifth Round, Extends IU's Draft Streak to Eight Years

Former Indiana defensive back Jamar Johnson was drafted with the 20th pick of the fifth round (164 overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. With the selection of Johnson, the Hoosiers have now had a played selected in eight-straight NFL Drafts (2014-2021).

Johnson played for the Hoosiers from 2018 to 2020 and broke out at the end of the 2019 season as one of IU’s best playmaking defensive backs. He played in 31 games over his IU career and posted 70 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, four sacks, seven interceptions, 14 passes defensed and two forced fumbles. He earned first-team All-Big Ten honors for the 2020 season in. which he led the team in interceptions with four.

What separates Johnson from most safeties is his versatility. NFL scouts salivate at the chance to kill two birds with one stone and draft for multiple positions. Johnson can line up as a safety and nickel-corner. He displays the instincts needed at the safety position. Johnson was able to record four interceptions and pass deflections last season as the anchor of the Hoosiers defense.
