Even though there was no real tackling in IU’s spring game on Saturday morning, it was easy to tell that defensive lineman Andre Carter was IU’s best defensive player. The transfer from Western Michigan has had an outstanding spring practice for the Hoosiers that culminated in almost a handful of sacks on Saturday.

“I would say, as we recognize there, he was the MVP of the defense, he and Noah (Pierre). It was that way about every day.” Allen said of Carter. “He is 270 pounds. He is the biggest, most physical one we've had here since I've been here. Very, very disruptive. Got to get him in elite shape. He is not there yet. “

Carter was a prize get for the Hoosiers this past offseason as IU tries to beef up the defensive line and get more production from the unit.

“I want to see our D-line to continue to have a domination mindset, to be able to take a game over.” Allen said after the spring game.

Carter has quickly become a leader on the defensive side of the ball.

Allen said he is “just really excited about (Carter). He is a great kid. He has bought into everything we're all about here, and I believe that you're right. He has to tackle a guy live, but you can tell what he can do.”

With spring practice coming to and end the focus shifts to organized team activities and player led practices as Carter tries to prove himself this fall in Big Ten play.

“Yeah, he is a very good football player. Glad he is with us now. He has a chance to prove that he belongs in the Big Ten.” Allen said.

The Hoosiers open the 2023 season at home against the Ohio State Buckeyes on September 2nd.
