Countdown to IUFB Kickoff: 64 Days (Ryan Smith)

Thirty-six players down, sixty-four to go. I promise you we’re getting closer to Indiana’s opening night matchup with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Today we take a look at a fresh face to the Hoosiers roster, Ryan Smith.

Ryan Smith (Freshman)

Height: 6’5’’

Weight: 292 pounds

Hometown: Loveland, Ohio

Position: Offensive line

Indiana’s offensive line will sport some new starting faces this season. Ryan Smith likely won’t be one of those faces, but he’s a new one nonetheless. Smith graduated from Archbishop Moeller in Ohio in 2015. A two-way player, Smith only allowed one sack and defensively had 48 tackles, seven sacks and two fumble recoveries.

Not a super high profile recruit, Indiana was the only school to give Smith an offer. Smith was grey shirted in 2016, essentially meaning he was at school as a student, not on scholarship yet, but not part of the team, even though it was known he would be on the team in 2017. His spot was more or less reserved for the following season.

While it’s difficult to believe that Smith will get much time, there are several pieces on Indiana’s offensive line that will be new and unproven. If they don’t prove to be up to par, Tom Allen could turn to Smith as a next option.
