Countdown to 2020 IUFB Kickoff: 88 Days (David Baker)
/Written by: Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)
The countdown to kickoff is at Day 88 and we profile true freshman wide receiver David Baker who is out of Scecina Memorial High School in Indianapolis.
Name – David Baker
Position – Wide Receiver
Year/Hometown – Freshman from Indianapolis, Indiana
Height – 6’3”
Weight – 200 pounds
Indianapolis local David Baker was a two-time All-State selection by the Indiana State Coaches Association and named to the IndyStar Super Team in 2019. He had a productive career at Scecina Memorial as he posted 164 catches for 2,263 yards and 31 touchdowns. He was also a force on defense as he picked up three interceptions and recovered a fumble.
Baker was also a star off the football field as he led Scecina to its first regional title for basketball in school history and lettered in track.
Baker will be fueled by the pride for playing for his home state school as he tries to break into a rotation that has plenty of depth. In an interview with Kyle Neddenriep of the IndyStar last July Baker acknowledged IU’s reputation around the state. “I’m from Indiana and know the history of IU football. I know it hasn’t been phenomenal with a bunch of top-10 seasons” Baker said, But the players have bought into the IU system and coach Allen. Every person I talked to was 100% bought in and believed in what they were doing.”
The Hoosiers bring back productive wide receivers in Whop Philyor and Ty Fryfogle while reserves like Miles Marshall, David Ellis Jacolby Hewitt, who is back from a knee injury that cost him the 2019 season, along with redshirt freshmen Jordan Jakes, Dashawn Brown and incoming freshman Rashawn Williams will battle for the rotation spots vacated with the departures of Nick Westbrook and Donavan Hale after the 2019 season. Baker should be able to work his way into at least the four games that are allowed to be played before losing his red shirt.
