The Hoosier Huddle countdown to kickoff is in its final stages, we’re just four days from gameday! The Hoosiers kick off the 2020 season at home against the Penn State Nittany Lions. Today, we’ll highlight the man wearing the number four jersey, Cam Jones.
Cam Jones (Junior)
Hometown: Memphis, Tennessee
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 230 Pounds
Position: Linebacker
One of Indaina’s four experienced linebackers that return to its 2020 defense is Cam Jones. Jones played husky in 2018 before transitioning to the stinger (weak-side linebacker) spot last season. At the stinger spot Jones tallied 35 tackles, two sacks, two quarterback hurries, and had a 44-yard pick six in the win over Connecticut. He was named a 2020 game captain per a vote by his teammates.
After the last couple weekends’ scrimmages, Coach Allen has identified the linebacking core as one of the strengths of the defense. Five guys (Aaron Casey, Micah McFadden, Thomas Allen, James Miller, and Jones) will be battling for the majority of the playing time.
"Those guys give us the most experience. That is going to be competitive and continue to be. Their attention to detail, how well they run the defense, how well they hit the run fits… they are all going to have to play," said Allen via teleconference last week.
Jones knew that the 2020 season was going to be a battle. After a couple shaky years at linebacker, this season looks to be more stable with a good amount of talent returning with experience.
“Coach Allen and Coach Wommack put the pressure on us as linebackers,” said Jones. “They told us what needed to get done, so we stepped our game up a little bit. We knew that we needed to fix ourselves first before we could fix anything else. We made that our number one priority. Once that got going, we got everybody else going with us.”
